ASHBY LEAVELL DIES LECTURING Prominent Capital Banker Collapses While Address- ing Student Class. B. Ashby Leavell, prominent Wash- ington banker and trust officer of the Merchants’ Bank & Trust Co., collapsed last night while delivering a lecture to a class of the Washintgon Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, at 1318 F street, and died within a few minutes, notwithstanding the efforts of his pupils, a physician from Casualty Hospital and the fire rescue squad. Mr. Leavell was seated in a chair on the lecture platform, conducting a class in trust functions, when he suddenly slip- ped from the chair, gasped and became unconscious. All efforts to revive him proved futile. His son John said to- day his father had always predicted he would die in harness, and insisted upon keeping on with his duties, notwith- ! standing the condition of his health. Mr. Leavell apparently had a pre- monition of death, for he brought with him to the lecture hall the examination papers of the class for next week. which, Frank M. Perley, vice president of the Washington Chapter of the in- stitute, said was most unusual. Mr. Leavell requested that the papers be put in the safe, remarking that he might not be present next week to handle them. Efforts to Revive Him Futile. Immediately after the collapse of Mr. Leavell, Joseph F. B. Goldney, a mem- ber of the institute and an employe of the Merchants' Bank & Trust Co., ran to a drug store for stimulants and called a doctor, The ambulance from Casualty Hospital and the fire rescue squad also were summoned and Dr. Louis Jimal of Casualty and the rescue squad worked over Mr. Leavell for nearly 30 minutes without reviving him. ‘They administered powerful stimulants and resorted to artificial respiration without success. 3 Although he was 65 years old, Mr. Leavell was very active and played golf over the course of the Bannockburn Golf Club, of which he was a member, on every available occasion. He played 36 holes last Sunday, and frequently played during the Summer on days which other members declared were too warm for golf. He had been a charter member of the Congressional Country Club and once was one of the most prominent members of the Columbia Country Club. Mr. Leavell had not been in good health for several months, although he had not missed a day at the bank for six months until yesterday, according to his son John. He made a special effort to attend his class in trust functions last night, however, as it was to be the final lecture before examinations next week. ‘Was Native of Virginia. Mr. Leavell was born in Rappahan- nock County, Va., and was educated in Culpeper, which he regarded as his boyhood home. He came to Washing- ton as a young man, becoming associ- ated with the American Security & Trust Co., where he organized the trust department of that banking institution. Six years ago he went with the Mer- chants’ Bank & Trust Co., organizing its trust department. He had been a member of the faculty of the American Institute of Banking for the past two years and was regarded as an authority on the trust functions of financial in- stitutions. Mr. Leavell lived at 37 East Bradley lane, Chevy Chase, Md. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth O. Leavell; the son mentioned, and a daughter, Mrs. Robert Malone, who lives at Stone- leigh Court. A brother and sister, who live in Virginia, also survive him. Coroner Nevitt issued a certificate of death from heart failure. LEE BOULEVARD ROUTE SURVEY BEING CHECKED State Engineer Phillips to Carry Inspection Work From Falls Church to Glebe Road. Special Dispatch to The Star. CLARENDON, Va, January 11.—A check on the survey recently made of the proposed route for the Lee Boule- vard was started yesterday by W. I. Phillips, State engineer, who was in charge of widening Lee Highway from Ballston to Cherrydale. Starting at Fort Buffalo, just beyond Falls Church, the check on the survey will continue to Glebe road, and any changes deemed advisable will be recommended by Mr. Phillips to the State Highway Commission. Engineers still are engaged in procuring rights of way. Planning ahead for a “straight-to- the-bridge road,” surveyors from the office of the county engineer are en- gaged on a proposed 50-foot boulevard to connect the former thoroughfare and Lee Highway. It is planned to run the road through Rucker avenue to Courthouse road, thence to West- over street and along Westover road to the straight-to-the-bridge road. De- tails of the survey, when completed, will be turned over to the Board of County Supervisors for consideration. Death Takes “Mad Magician.” BIRMINGHAM, England, January 11 (#)—Frank Van Hoven, an American vaudeville actor, died here today of “The Mad Magician,” his act being a burlesque which he worked up after he had found that straight conjuring and sleight-of-hand feats brought small re- turns. CAVALRY T0 HUNT FORCE. Word Lacking of Expedition Sent! to Wipe Out Mexico Apaches. DOUGLAS, Ariz, January 11 (#)— Mexican officlals today began outfitting a regiment of cavalry to establish con- tact with the punitive expedition against an Apache Indian band in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Sonora. No word had been received from Francisco Fimbres, leader of the expe- dition, who a week ago, with a commis- sion from Fausto Topete, governor of Sonora, led a band of 11 men into the steep and rugged canyons to wipe out the marauding Apaches. In 1926 the Apaches killed Fimbres’ wife and took his small son into captivity. The last report on the Fimbres expedition came from the Bacerac district five days ago as it prepared to penetrate to the last known camp of the raiders. @ards of Thanks. COWGILL. FRANCES M.
