Local bank stocks were strong on the ‘Washington Exchange toda; Riggs National sold to the extent of six shares at 568. National Savings & Trust opened with 10 shares selling at 520, 10 shares then going at 521 and closing with a 10-share sale at 521'2. This is half a point higher than the stock sold at any time in 1928. One other bank stock was out, Washington Loan & Trust register- ing a sale at 522. Capital Traction stock opened at 1065% and closed at 106%;. Fifteen shares of Railway & Electric preferred appeared on the board at 99' Mer- genthaler led the market in volume of trading, 80 shares selling at 104 and 60 at 1044 Chestnut Farms Dairy pre- ferred sold up to 10873 and 10 shares of Terminal Refrigerating & Warehous- ing Corporation stock registered 51. NEW YORK, January 11.—Strong in | the morning, today's stock market re acted in the afternoon as money, which had renewed at 6 per cent, advanced to 7 per cent for new loans. The early gains were canceled in part, some stocks even showing losses on the day, and the close was one of irregular net price changes. The outstanding feature was U. S. Steel. Although this old market leader sold off in the later trading with the | rest of the list, it held a good share of its gain. Another strong issue was U. S. Rubber. Most of the motor stocks on the reaction and there was no real‘ weakness, Opening quotations were gen- erally at advances. Other independents in good demand | included Crucible, Sloss-Sheffield and Vanadium. The last named, however, is not entirely dependent on the steel outlook for its attraction. The feature of the utilities was Con- solidated Gas, in which there was evi- dently a strong group at work. The overnight announcement of the new | Super Power combination in New York, | New Jersey and Pennsylvania stimulated | | speculation as to a huge local merger || of which Consolidated Gas would be the | & gh | nucleus.
