By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, January 5—One of the State's three “missing” witnesses in the trial of Dr. Amante Rongett!, accused of the murder of Miss Loretta Enders, 19 years old, by an illegal operation, came to court to testify against him yesterday. She was Mrs. Hazel Reed, formerly superintendent of nurses at Dr. Ron- serm‘s hospital, and she testified that Rongetti had performed an illegal operation on Miss Enders in her pres- ence and that he had performed other suc:l operations on other patients previ- ously. She also declared that Dr. Rongetti refused to operatg on Miss Enders when she was in a cm&-l condition followin, the birth of her baby, which had died, stating that he told her the girl and her people had no more money. Dr. Rongetti once was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death, but the Supreme Court granted a new trial. The first trial ended with William Scott Stewart, defense attorney, facing a jail gentence for contempt of court on the charge that he tried to intimidate State witnesses. Since the second trial started the State had annrounced two of its wit- nesses, including Mrs. Reed, had vanished, and Thursday night another witness called the police and said he would not testify because he had been threatened with death, and efforts ta find him were futile. Mrs. Reed, however, was produced by the State, but the other missing witness, Lorraine Irwin, a nurse, who at the first trial saild she also was present when Dr. Rongetti operated, has not been found.
