By the Assoclated Press. ORRVILLE, Ohio, December 31.— Search for 4-year-old Melvin Horst, who disappeared from his home here late Thursday, led officers to Columbus today. Two women reported last night they had seen a child who fits the de- scription of the missing boy on a street car at Columbus Saturday night in the company of an elderly couple. ‘While officers were Investigating the Columbus report 50 volunteer searchers set out this morning to explore a 100- acre fleld near the village. Numerous stacks of railroad ties there, officers as- serted, make it an ideal place to hide a body. Working on the theory the boy was kidnaped for ransom, officers believe Melvin was mistaken for a neighbor boy |about his age. His father, Raymond Horst, is a laborer, while his neighbor is considered wealthy. BROOKHART BARES DATA ON G. 0. P. PATRONAGE | Southern Postmastership Sales Dis- closed by Chairman of Sen- ate Probers. By the Assoclated Press. Further disclosures of alleged sales of postmastership appointments in the South were made yesterday by Chair- man Brookhart of the Senate subcom- mittee which has been delving into pa- |tronage in South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi. Supplementing the data gathered during the course of hearings in the South and in Washington, lists made public by Senator Brookhart alleged that more than $20,000 had been contributed to Republican funds by Georgia post- masters and that expenditures of more than $25,000 had been made by the Republican organization of that State. The lists, in the form of card indexes and check book stubs, were seized dur- ing the investigation the subcommittee made in Atlanta last July and have just been filed in the official record. TWO LINKED IN SLAYING. Men in Plot Against Hoover Sus- pected of Prior Crime, BUENOS AIRES, December 31 (#).— The police belleve that they have un- covered evidence linking Alejandro Scarffo and Gomez Olizer, held in con- nection with an alleged plot against Herbert Hoover, with the incident sev- eral months ago when a pedestrian was killed by the explosion of a bomb which had been removed from the steps of the Buenos Afres cathedral. The diary of Scarffo was said to have contained a newspaper picture of the victim, under which had been written, “It is l]amentable. It was unintentional.” Existence of an alleged plot to blow up the railroad train on which Mr, Hoover was coming from the Chilean frontier was discovered by the police two days before his arrival. The police said that in the rooms of the two men arrested they had found a railroad map marked at the point selected, as well as a quantity of explosives and firearms. EDWARD J. STELLWAGEN PRESIDENT.
