In an address before the opening ses- sion of the twenty-second annual con- vention of the National Association of Life Insurance Presidents, Chandler Bullock stated that the American people this year are breaking all prior records in the purchase of life insurance by a wide margin. During 1928 the American people will have acquired approximately $18,- 500,000,000 of new life insurance. This is $1,365,000,000 more than the $17.- 135,000,000, which was bought in 1927. The sum of $8,000,000,000 net will be added at the end of the present year to the insurance in force, making a to- tal of approximately $95,000,000,000 on the lives of 65,000,000 policy holders. In 1901 the fathers of today's buyers acquired $2,020,000,000 of insurance. This year the grown-up children will acquire over nine times the amount their fathers did at the beginning of the century. This year's production exceeds three and one-half times that of 1918—only 10 years ago. It is noteworthy that while it took 80 years—1843 to 1922, inclusive—to ac- cumulate the first $50,000,000,000 in force, the second $50,000,000,000 proba- bly will be achieved in a little less than seven years, Mr. Bullock says. Local Brokers Distribute Bonuses. Harriman & Co., of which G. Bowie Chipman is the resident partner, has distributed a bonus of 20 per cent of yearly salaries to all employes. Eastman, Dillon & Co., Arthur For- aker being manager of the Washington office, was today distributing Christmas bonus checks. G. M. P. Murphy & Co. paid a sub- stantial bonus today to employes in both of its Washington offices. W. B. Hibbs & Co. follows its usnal custom this year and presented Christ- mas bonuses to members of the staff. It is understood in the financial dis- trict that some of these bonuses are un- P ' NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE - Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office. Abitibi Power-. .. PRrofits Shared With Employes. A merry Christmas for the employes of Y. E. Booker & Co. was assured to- day when the firm presented each in- dividual with a check equivalent to a full year’s salary. These checks repre- sented the amounts due under the profit-sharing plan put into effect in 1926, when the firm was established. The plan is an unusually liberal one. Approximately 25 per cent of all earn- ings, above an amount equivalent to a modest salary for the members of the firm, is distributed to the personnel at the end of each calendar year. The pmrortlon of the profits which each individual receives is governed by his annual salary. The membess of the firm are George Hewitt Myers and Yelverton E. Booker. Both expressed themselves today as be- ing greatly pleased with the results achieved under the profit-sharing plan. Christmas Party Happy Affair. ‘The annual Christmas party given by the Federal-American National Bank to its employes at the Colum- bia Country Club Saturday night was the usual enjoyable family affair. Din- ner was served at 7 o'clock. President John Poole and other officers of the bank being present. A homelike touch was added to the feast by the ment of tables, each presided over a bank officer who carved the turkey. The dinned and dancing and other entertainment which followed was more or less formal. Entertainment included a pla; let under the direction of Miss Leona Anthony and songs by Miss Lois White and Edwin Steffe. The Federal-American Club will dis- tribute Christmas baskets of provisions, clothing and toys to approximately 30 destitute families whose condition has been investigated by bank employes and found deserving. This is an annual charity of the bank and this morning bountiful baskets were banked around the huge Christmas tree in the lobby of the bank awaiting distribution. Miss Helen K. Delany is chairman of the committee in charge of this charity. Title Company Enlarges Board. At a meeting of the board of directors of the Capitol Title & Guarantee Co., following a dinner given by President John Paul Earnest at the Racquet Club, the board was increased by the addi: tion of John D. C. Duncan, vice presi- dent of the Drovers and Mechcnics National Bank of Baltimore; W. Meade Holladay, president of the Annapolis branch of the Eastern Shore Trust Co.; Edmund S. Dickey, president of the Maryland Meter & Manufacturing Co.; William S. Quinter, president of the District Building & Loan Association, and Samuel S. Spruce, formerly with the Columbia Title Co. President Earnest reported a satis- factory increase in the business of the company and a lively interest in the matter of title insurance. Pennsy Earnings May Set Record. As a tesult of the unusually large net railway operating income shown by the Pennsylvania Railroad in October, which broke all records for any month, and good earnings in November, it is be- lieved that earnings per share for 1928 will set a new record. In 1927 the com- pany earned 13.65 per cent on its out- standing stock, a shade better than the 13.53 per cent earned in 1926. These were the largest figures shown by the Pennsylvania in over 35 years, and this year is expected to be just a little better than the 13.65 per cent earned in 1927. Earnings will be ahead of last year in spite of the 121 per tent stock allotment last Spring. In other words, estimates this year are based on roundly $562,500,000 stock outstanding at close of this year, against $500,000,000 outstanding at close of 1927. Notwithstanding larger dividend dis- bursements as a result of the 121, per cent stock allotment, the Wall Street Journal considers it is also possible that the company will carry a larger sum forward to surplus account than it did last year. Exchange Closes Today. ‘The Washington Stock Exchange was closed today and will be closed with all other financial institutions tomorrow. Archduke Is Wanderer. The head of the Toscana branch of the Hapsburg family and once an arch- duke, Leopold Woefling, is now a home- less wanderer through the streets of | Vienna. Once he graced the courts of Europe and today he is without a place to call home. Worse than that he has not the price to set himself up in the business of a sidewalk peddler of shoe- strings. There has always been a strain of rebelliousness' in the Toscans branch. Member after member of the family has revolted against the traditions of the old imperial house. Leopold Woel- fling was no exception to this precedent of rebellion. He disregarded the Emperor’s restric- tions over and over again, and finally married an actress. This brought the imperial wrath on him, but there was worse to follow. The marriage was a failure, he divorced the actress, and married a girl of the people in 1907. It was the last straw. But that was a minor matter. It was offset largely by the extraordinary strength in Goodyear Tire & Rubber, a stock which had gone up nearly 17 | points last week. Closing at 120 Sat- | urday it was selling almost 10 points higher before noon today. Goodrich gained nearly 3 points in the same time and even United States Rubber was in | demand. | In the merchandising group National Bellas Hess starred with a rise of some 15 points to a high record. Macy jumped more than 7 points. Sears Roebuck was very strong. It opened on a block of 12,000 shares at 175, up 612 points, and extended the gain 5 points more in the later trading. The motor stocks all worked higher. | Chrysler was the leader with a rise of 5 points as it crossed 126. Packard, Hupp, and especially Hudson, were ac- tively bought at advancing prices.
