FINANCIALDL." CONVERTIBLE BOND LIST MAKES GAINS, * Manufacturing Firms’ Securi- _ties Also Show Advance. Coppers Up. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecizl Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, November 23.—There | ‘were only two groups of bonds today in which price movements attracted atten- tion. These were the convertible indus- trials and a small list of bonds of man- ufacturing companies that have recent- | Iy been weak but have turned about and are advancing on the improvement in stocks. Sensational gains occurred once more in the h\gh~prlced copper convertibles. | Andes 7s went up by leaps and bounds and had gained 12!, points at midday and at this time were 110 points above their redemption figure. The stock into | which they are convertible has ad- vanced 15 points this month. Anaconda Copper 7s gained another 5 points, which placed them nearly 75 points above the low of the year. . Other strong convertibles were J. ayser 558 with a rise of 5 points, Pathe 7s up 3 points, Cuba Cane Sugar 7s and 8s each 3 points and Wickwire Spencer 7s a point. There was a lower tendency in some of the oil company convertibles, notably Colon 6s and Transcontinental 6!2s. In addition to the rise in the Cuba Cane bonds there were Bdwm(',(‘s of a point in Eastern Cuba Sugar 7'as and | in Manati Sugar 71,s. The market po- sition of the sugar bonds has materially improved recently without, however, any indication of a change for the bet- ter in the sugar trade. Conditions have also become more favorable with respect to such bonds as Lorillard 5s and 5',3, International Paper 5s and 6s and Certainteed Prod- ucts 5'5s, which have been subjected to heavy liquidation, and now appear to hnve successfully weathered it. * The market for strictly investment is- sues was dull, without much change in prices today, although there has been some decline from the high level es-! tablished early in the month. ‘The Treasury will probably announce the terms of its December financing early next week, as notice has already gone out to the Federal Reserve banks to prepare for it. Opinion is that an- other short-term loan will be negotiat- ed, with the rate around 4 per cent. ‘The market for the last Treasury issues is on about that basis, though not quite 50 _high as a week ago. ‘Total issues of bonds this week ran up to $167,000,000. the largest output since June, increased mainly by the heavy issues of municipal bonds. FRIDAY,® (oo von BONDS smoee excuna] | {VANCE IN CURB SHARES CONTINUES Tradfng Records Shattered as Various Issues Gain. New Tops Reached. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 23.—With the ticker running 48 minutes late at midday and with all trading records for the first two hours shattered by today's tremendous volume of 1,422,500 shares the floor of the Curb Exchange presented a scene of wild confusion. There was every indication that a new trading record would be estab- lished for a five-hour session because of the tendency of the volume to in- crease as the session progressed. Practically every group was repre- sented with one or more new high records. In the oil group it was Prarie Oil & Gas and Crystal that reached new peaks, while others continued up- ward for gains of fractions to more than 2 points. With the facilities of not only the Curb Exchange but of the brokerage offices taxed to their utmost in an endeavor to keep up with the tre- mendous activity, it was necessary for the governors of the institution to vote for a full closing Saturday following similar action by the Stock Exchange officials, New high records were marked up in Marconi Wireless Telegraph, Ltd., and Canadian Marconi. Both issues turned over in heavy volume on the rise. ' This was a direct response to the British government's approval of the communi- | cations plan, which will résult in the transfer of wireless and cable companies to private ownership under government supervision. Niles-Bement-Pond and Keystone Aireraft went forward to new highs in sympathy with early strength in the airplane shares on the Stock Exchange. Others that reached their best prices included Butler Brothers, up 9 points to 53: Evans Co. up a point or so; Gleaner Combine Harvester, up over 2 points; Filene, almost 2 points higher; Radio-Keith-Albee, which opened on a block of 10,600 shares at 41% and sub- sequently reached 43. ‘The aero supply issues were in urgent demand at substantially higher prices. Aluminum Co. of America. extended its 12-point gain of Thursday another 12 points to 162. Trading started in the new du Pont common, initial sales taking place at 141. Some nervousness was felt shortly after midday following the report that the Federal Reserve would have an announcement to make later in the day. Washmgton Stock Exchange SALES. The resf tion was then placed on the imports, which were believed to be injuring the American industry. Under the tariff act of 1922, where commodities are imported for sale at less than in the country of origin, the Treasury is em‘rowmd to assess duties to protect the domestic ind\mry Com- missioner of Customs Camp announced that imports of pig iron from Germany have fallen until they are now of a negligible quantity. Secretary Mellon's order, hawever, provided that should the imports be resumed in large quan- tities, the anti-dumping order should be renewed. . DIVIDENDS. Stock and Curb Markets Take Holi- day to Catch Up. NEW YORK, November 23 (#).—The board of goverrors of the New York Stock Exchange today voted to close the exchange on Saturday. Offices of exchange members, however, will remnln open. Governors of the New York Curbl Market also voted to suspend trading ! tomorrow. Closing of both markets will enable member houses to catch up with book- | keeping, badly delayed by more than a | week of heavy trading, in which total | sales exceeded 5,000,000 shares. It will | also afford a breathing spell for traders who have participated in the frenzied activity on the floor and for office em- | ployes who have labored far overllme‘ every night. Trading on both the stock and curb | ‘markets broke all records for total sales for the first two hours today, 3,418,400 shares changing hands between 10 and 12 o'clock on the stock market and 1,- 422,500 shares on the curb. SALES IS EXPEDITED Enables Ticker to Keep Pace. ) 4 | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 23.—By a series of experiments covering many | months the New York Stock Exchange authorities have reduced the work of the operators on the floor and given the public a quicker view of what is taking place around the trading posts. Looking back, it is now possible to see how cumbersome the old system was, when full information was given with each transaction, to identify not only the stock dealt in but the unit of trade in the stock. groups of symbols have been dropped until the quotation is the only remain- ing evidence available. After all. this seller. When the volume of transactions on the Stock Exchange began to expand and to test the facilities for printing the record of the day's market the exchange authorities started in to sim- plify the work of reporting by reducing the number of letfers in each stock symbol. Some of these contained two letters and some three. They were cut down to one letter. Then the symbols were arranged alphabetically instead of in a hodge-podge way, as they had besn previously. ~ The first revolutionary change, and one that temporarily ex- cited much criticism in brokers’ offices, was the dropping of the full price of tation in the morning and subsequently using only the last figure in the price. Wall Street quickly accommodated itself to this abbreviation and has gone world’s history since and scarcely no- ticed it. Another simplification was a reduction in the unit of trading to one or two figures. Now the trading units have been dropped entirely from the stock ticker and shoved over on to the bond ticker, which ran off long strings of them at various times yesterday. The effect of all of these abbrevi- ations up to the last one introduced was not visible, for in spite of them the tape has frequently been from one hour 40 an hour and a half behind the market. Yesterday's innovation, how- ever, speeded up conditions greatly and, although the market was again of tre- mendous size, it was only a compara- tively little way behind time during the day. Those who base their trading operations on volume of transactions were somewhat disappointed, as thay could not get the trend of the market from this source. Every one else was pleased with the way the system worked and it is hoped that by the continued use of it Wall Street may be able to catch up on its delayed business with- out being forced into extra holidays or shortened mdln: period.
