NEW ORLEANS (Special).—Thirt five miles up the Mississippi River 145 young men are engaged in one of th> largest surveving projects in America today. They are making the plans an-l maps for the $3,000.000 spillway whizh the United States Government will con- struct to protect New Orleans and tho lower valley from floods of the future. Every morning this band of youths, sun-tanned 'and clad in khaki. set ont from the two Government quarter boats vith transits, levels. stadia rods and target poles. Up and down. east and west, they are running their lines over an area of 56 squar~ miles. From th» river to the lake and from Noreo to the Hammond highway. Under the direction of the engin ing experts of the Missippi River Com- mission and the United States Armv they are organized into as efficient a unit of engineers as ever gathered anywhere. Capt. Helmer Swenhold, Engineer Corps. United Stotes Army, who has built spillways and floodways up 2n7 down the Ohio River, directs their work. Back and forth over the vast arex of 56 miles these young men run th: lines. They have to cut their wav through pathless forests of waeds anc trees. With machetes and axes they slash and hack their way along. Mosquitoes, gnats. bugs and flies of every description pester th-m. snakes wiggie over the ground, but the linz goes through. Every tree. every houss, every riss i1 the ground. canal, ditch, road, must b> “located” for the map. Under a blis- tering sun they work their calculations of geometry and trigonometry with slide rules and Iogarithms. Accuyac; is their standard. ‘They set out divided into a dozen surveying parties. Thay leave at 7 am and for five hours th2y run the- lines and stop half an hour for.lunch. They are back at it in half an hour. and throughout the swelt>ring heat of the afternoon go on with their work. At 4:30 or 5 p.m. they quit the fleld. returning to the quarter boats. When the survey is completed th» Government engineers will sslect ths location of the spillway. It is to be 7.000 feet wide and approximately 5> miles long. It will run from the rivar to Lake Pontchartrain. Actual construction is expsctad to b started in the Fall. - Valua. From the Boston Glote.
