TUNNEY 15 UNABLE T0 GREET FIANCEE - Red Tape Bars Pugilist inf Boardina Ship to Meet Miss Lauder. By the Asiociated Press. NAPLES, Italy, October 2.—Miss Mary Jozephine Lauder arrived here today to marry Gene Tunney, but the retired heavyweight boxing champion was unable to go aboard the motorship Saturnia to meet her as soon as she arrived. Tunney exhausted every means of obtaining permission to board the ves- sel immediately and was not at the pler when the vessel docked. Passen- gers were held aboard until medical examination and other formalities were completed. Miss Lauder had sent Tunney a radio message suggesting he join her on board the ship and continue on to Trieste in an effort to avoid publicity for their marriage. Tunney had spent several days in obtaining the necessary per- mission for an immediate marriage either at Naples or Rome and appeared a bit staggered at the prospect of hav- ing to repeat the struggle with red tape in another province. He sent his flancee a radio message that their marriage must take place in either Rome or Naples unless she was willing to un- dergo further delay. ‘The retired pugilist amazed waiters at a Naples restaurant when he left his wine untouched. One remarked to another, “It seems impossible that he s}’l:um be so strong without drinking wine.” “This is some place and those were wild times.” Tunney said when his guides pointed out the Island of Me- garis, where Cicero met Brutus after the assassination of Julius Caesar.
