A young couple was held up at the point of a pistol while sitting in a parked automobile last night on Riggs road southeast and robbed of money and jewelry amounting to $70. They were saved from further loss by the quick wit of the girl, who hid her val- uable jewelry under the seat of the car. Owen G. Watson, an automobile salesman living at 4027 Connecticut avenue, and Miss Marie Soelter, pretty young Floridan, who is living at 13 First street northeast while on a short visit to Washington with her parents. went for an automobile ride and parked their car a little off the side of the road at Riggs road about 10:30 o'clock last night. A few minutes later a dilapidated au- tomobile containing three white men passed them slowly, proceeding a short distance down the road and then re- turned, halting directly in front of their car. One of the men quickly got out of the car. His face was covered with a handkerchief and he held a revolver in his hand, Miss Soelter said today. Watson got out of his machine and was met with a gun jammed against his ribs. “Give us what you got,” the hold-up man said. As Watson fumbled for his pocket- book, the robber hastened him with a prod with the muzzle of the revolver and a sharp word. He then ordered Watson to walk away from the car in which the young woman sat. Meanwhile Miss Soelter had slipped her diamond ring from her finger, together with her wrist watch, hidden in behind the seat of the machine. The rober repeated his formula, “Give us what you got,” but this time collected only a pocketbook containing a driver’s permit and a registration card. By this time Watson had returned. Still covering the couple with his gun. the hold-up man removed the arm from the distributor of their motor, prevent- ing the starting of the car, and then ran for his machine, which his two companions had gotten in motion. ‘Watson and Miss Soelter struck out on foot in the direction in which they thought the city lay. Before they had gone far they were picked up by the driver of a large truck, who took them to the police substation at Fifteenth and H streets northeast, where they reported the affair.
