The girls were Marion Mullen, 15, of Brooklyn, N. Y., and Mary Shapleigh, 14, of Buffalo, N. Y. They told officers at the local police station that the walk was a “dare” undertaken in the hope of reaching ‘West Lebanon, Me., where Miss Shap- leigh's father was staying. They had only 25 miles to go, but, footsore, weary anl begrimed by the dust of the road, they were glad to call it off and accept police hospitality and the generous meal that went with it. R The girls began their hike with only $1.50, lost 50 cents and spent but 50 cents for food, subsisting principally on fruits and berries obtained by the wayside, and sleeping in the open. A. H.
