PARIS, July 25.—France has aban- doned, for the time being at least, its joint navy and commerce department attempt to span the Atlantic from east to west by plane, according to a semi- official announcement made yesterday. The announcement was to the effect that Lieut. Paulin Paris, who reached Horta in the Azores Monday in hi\ and would return to France on the cruiser Ville D'Ys. The fact that the flight of La Fregate had been interrupted by motor diffi- culties, necessitating repairs and re- piacement of parts, was given as the reason for abandoning the flight. It was explained that the flight was pure- whether a mail route by way of the Azores and Bermuda was practicable {and that the experiment had been spoiled by the delay. It is considered probable that the | fight will be attempted later. Original plans were for Lieut. Paris to attempt the crossing and if he failed to send another plane, piloted by Capt. Rene Builbaud, in his place.
