Earnings of the Capital Traction Co. for the month of May and for the first five months of the present year were filed today with the Public Utilities | Commission, and |both revealed a { falling off in not {incom? when com- I'pared with the cor- | responding period a year agd. Operating reve- {nues for May of this year amountea to $386.038.63, as |compared with 91.344.19 in May, perating d taxes the total $201.457.38. as lazainst the slight- | ly higher figure last ;\t’lr of $291,764.30. | The wusual «.- ductions from the operating revenues lleft a net income from operations of IS’N 581.25, in comparison with an op- | erating income of $99,579.89 in May-a | vear ago. Other deductions left a net income for the month of $6 8.27, | while the net income in May, 1927, | amounted to the higher figure of | $73.248.36. | The moderate falling off in net in- rcm- for the month was largely due to a slump in the number of revenue pas- | | sengers carried on the company's lines. | Revenue passengers in May of this year | tetaled 5.197,016, while in May. 1927, | number of passengers using the | | strect car service was 5,334,935, Net Earnings for Five Months. Net carnings for the first five months (he prcsem year amounted to 9.999.73, in comparison with a net | of $329,277.05 in the corre- | <pondlng period last year. t The report to the Utilities Commis- | sion shows operating revenues of $1,- 1889,950.50 in this period, against $1,922,~ 100422 & year ago. The company paid out in expenses and taxes the sum of' | $1,447,143.49, while this figure a year ago stood at $1,464,218.99. This left an .opcnun. income of $442,807.01, com- | | pared with the return in May, 1927, of | $457.785.23. 4 With the lower net income for the | five months it is to be expected that | the number of revenue pnvnqm would show a decline. The Traction lines were used by 23,50! W{ revenue passengers in the first five months of this year, while the number a year ago was 26,240,979. | In April of this year the company reported net income of $71,504.85 and passenger traffic of 5,140911. note that while the Whliam H. Industrials Irregular. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Sta.. NEW YORK, June 22.— Railroad | stocks again assumed the leadership in (today's market. The turnover was small, and the industrials at their best | | were only irregular, but the rails v\rre: uniformly firm and some of them strong, especially in the last hour. The lower-priced rails were the fea-! tures. Western Maryleand had a spec- tacular rise of some 6 points. Mis- sourl, Kansas & Texas was taken in large blocks at higher pric: Missouri | Pacific, New York, Ontario & Western, St. Paul preferred, Wabash and others were in demand. In the dividend-p: ing grcup Delaware & Hudson was con- spicuous. Texas & Pacific jumped 5! points. Opening__quotations were slightly | “ | higher. The reduction in brokers’ loans of $158,000,000 was about in line with expectations. It brought about | some short covering at the start, but| when this had been satisfied the list relapsed into dullness. The continuing | high rate for call money, which renewed per cent, was a damper on specu- | lative sentiment. Higher Money Outlook. ‘ With heavy interest and dividend | | disbursements to be cared for on July| 1.a higher charge for day-to-day funds | is not improbable, and until this date | is passed there will b2 nothing in the | money outlook to encourage operations | | for the rise. { Scattered strength in independent | motors was due largely to merger de- velopments, actual and potential. Ap- proach of the time for deposit of Dodge | Bros. stocks in ratification of the merger | with Chrysler induced buying of all the | stocks concerned. Chrysler at one time was up over 3 points and Dodge preferred 2 points. | Then the story was renewed that Stude- | baker and Pierce-Arrow would be com- j bined. Pierce-Arrow common and pre- | ferred responded with an advance-and | Studebaker itseif was somewhat higher. General Motors fluctuated uncertainly. | first up and then down, on a small | volume. Rubber Shares Weak. | Rubber stocks were weak, especiaily | U. 8. Rubber, the common and pre- | ferred of which went to new 1923 low: | Goodrich and Goodyear sold off sym ‘pathelicsll) Steel opened higher but | came down afterward. Some of the | | copper_shares were in demand, among | them Howe Sound, but others reacted. | There was no renewal of the attack on the railway equipments, which had (en- tured the markets the day before. Railroads were relatively firm. West- |ern Maryland stood out among the | the lower priced stocks, partly because of the retirement of short contracts rtly because of the decision in Delaware & Hudson was well taken around the high of the day before. | Texas & Pacific gained, but Southern | Pacific, Erie, Chesapeake & Ohio and | others weakened. { Flurry in Tractions. After noon the market was enlivened | by a flurry in the traction stocks. Third Avenue was the leader of the demon- stration, avuncin: from 32 to 37!s, up Manhattan made symnnlmlc gains. | The general market was much mixed and very -dull. Up to 1 o'clock sales were not much over 900,000 shares, or below the volume of Thursday at the| same hour. Radio was outstandingly strong. up over 6 points, but Generai Motors and Steel held under the pre- | ceding close. v stocks - were | stmng noubly Chile Copper and Greene Cananea. Features in the railway list were still Western Maryland and Texas & Pacific, ur‘:llll of which added to its forenoon gain. FOX EARNINGS RISE.
