Important Notice THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. ¢, THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 198, ROMANGE BANNED IN CHINESE ARMY Marshal Feng Forbids Mar- riages and Divorce Under Penalty of Death. By the Associated Press. PEKING, March 1.—Romance has no part in revolution, in the opinion of Marshal Feng Yu-Hslang, once known as the “Christlan General.” At his headquarters at Kaifeng, Ho- nan, Marshal Feng has issued a stern decree to his subordinates forbidding any bachelor among them to marry, or any married man to seek divorce, “be- fore the final success of the revolution.” The penalty for disobedlence is death. According to Marshal Feng, necessity for this ukase grew out of conditions brought on by the revolution itself. The ruler of Honan, Shensi and Kansu prov- Inces and commander of the Kuomin- chun, or “people’s army,” explained that woman workers have been admitted to the Kuomintang, the party behind the nationalist movement, and a large pro- portion of these, young and well edu- cated, are so\attractive to the young males of the party that romantic as- pirations have in many cases displaced enthusiasm for the revolution. Older officers, too, have been affected. Many of these, sald Marshal Fenz, “have wives in their homes who are old- fashioned, flliterate and have bou: feet.” These officers, brought into con- tact with the modernized, bobbed-hair- ed voung women of the revolutionary party, neglect their old homes and help- mates and seek freeedom to form new unions. Marshal Feng denounced this as contrary to traditional Chinese mo- rality and the principles of Sun Yat Sen, the father of the revolution. ~— A recent census of Manchuria shows that it has 27,490,000 people, which is 5,000,000 above all previous estimates. Nearby was a rusty revolver, the trigger loosened with olive oll. “You shot yourself,” detectives told Jimmy, “because you couldn't find work and thought there'd be one less to feed at home.” “Don’t tell them that,” pleaded the boy in a hospital. “Just say some- body shot me and I won't be home.” He has a slim chance for recovery, physicians said. DESERT INDIANS BUILT CISTERN INTO ROCKS Small, Jug-Shaped Holes Dug by Aborigines Saved Water in the Sacramento Mountains. Correspondence of the Assoclated Press, ALAMOGORDO, N. M.—Small jug- shape cisterns, cut into solid rock in the driest section of the Sacramento moun- tains, may solve the secret of how early Indians lived in the desert. The cisterns, discovered recently by Forest Ranger W H. Woods, are most ingenlously located so that rain from the mountainside into them. Each cistern was covered with a large flat rock, which observers believe served the double purpose of keeping the cistern hidden and free from rubbish. The cisterns, of which many have been found, hold from 5 to 10 gal- lons of water each. Nearby are impressions of human feet on the limestone floor.
