The movement of prices was by no means uniform. although the upward movement predominated in most groups during the greater part of the session. The news from the steel centers over the holiday continued optimistic, and there were prospects of further in- creases in price schedules. It was a question, however. whether a quicken- g of the del d was due to a gen- uine improvement in outside business or merely the desire of buyers to ob- rm< at_prevailing price s Steel toward mid- 1t above the previous m Steel gained a like Youngstown. BY J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, February 14.—Today, February 14, proves the fallacy of the old theory that there is no sentiment in business. St. Valentine’s day this year also is acutely illustrative of the fact that there is business in sentiment. This holiday undoubtedly will mean the ad- dition of tens of millions of dollars ot receipts to merchants, public utility companies and other business men throughout the United States. The printers and publishers naturally will benefit first. Their products this year are probably as elaborate as in any season ever known, but the price levels of those products have been ma- terially reduced. This has been brought about by a tremendous volume of pro- duction and distribution by means of the chain stores and 5 and 10 cent es- tablishments. The volume of business done in valentines by the two most im- portant 5 and 10 cents store chains will | run into tremendous figures. | Adds to Government Revenue. The delivery of these valentines will | mean additional revenue to the United | States Government, although it will also | mean heavy additional work to the al- | ready burdened post office employes. Railroad and airplane transportation benefit incidentally. The prices of valentines, in most cases, have dropped approximately 75 per cent in _the last five years. Florists and candy manufacturers all over the country made preparations for a record-breaking business today in bouquets and boutonnieres of various types and sizes and in candy. No small amount of the florists' business has been transacted this year by means of the telegraph and through the working ar- rangements which the florists have with each other in various parts of the | country. The telegraph and cable companies | have prepared for a service this )ear“ which bids fair to rival the volume of greetings dispatched at Christmas and | New Year. Service on the telephone, which was extremely heavy at best, ow ing to the Lincoln’s birthday holiday, was still further congested by valentine greetings sent by word of mouth. The long-distance lines benefited to an ap- preciable extent from these toll mes- | sages. | Amusement Enterprises Gain. It is estimated that the Lincoln holi- | day followed by St. Valentine's day meant an increase of between $100,000 and $150,000 to the amusement enter- prises of New York City. The theaters | and amusement resorts of every other town and city in the country benefited | {; to _some extent. The theatrical enterprise, especially, ! needed the encouragement. While busi- | ness in New York for some productions | has been remarkable this season, there | has been a steady line of failures. Mov- | ing picture theaters have been com- plaining with increasing intensity of the business which they have experienced in the last six weeks. This perhaps is also to be taken as a tribute to the indus- trial activity of the country, for it is in times of depression as well as in times | of extreme prosperity that the moving picture theaters assemble their largest audiences. The dropping off in busi- ness, however, has not been so much | $73,000,000 REPORTED FI.\'ANCIAL. MERGER PLAN EFFECTIVE. TRAFFIC OUTLOOK FAIH U s TRADE BALANGE PHILADELPHIA, February 14 (#).— 1 Western Maryland Hnnlgerl Opti- By the Associated Press. January exports from the United States were $411,000,000 and imports were $338,000,000, leaving a favorable trade balance for the month for the Nation of $73,000,000. The figures, as announced today by the Commerce Department, indicated a slight decline in the foreign trade total for the new year, as compared with last year, when January exports were $419,- 402,000 and imports were $356,841,000. Gold exports from the United States for January were $52,086,000, offset partially by imports of $38,320,000, with the result of decreasing the country's gold stock by $13,766,000. While the January outflow of gold was much larger than that for corresponding months in recent years, it was consider- ably below the exports of December and November, indicating at least a slow- ing up in the world demand for Amer- ican monetary stocks. January silver exports were $6,692,000. and imports were $6,305,000. For Jln-l uary last year silver exports were $7.- | 388,000 and silver imports $5,151,000. Washington S.tock Exchange Sales. Pot.
