Special Dispatch to The NEW YORK, January 28.—The clos- ing session of the week on the Stock Exchange was characterized by a brief aermd of pronounced strength in the ighly volatile speculative favorites, ir- regularity among old-line dividend- paying rails and rather urgent profit- taking in all directions in the last hour. It was a typical Saturday market, with traders disposed to take down profits. But this tendency did not de- velop until after numerous specialty favorites, which had the support of powerful pools, had been carried for- ward to new high levels. If the re- covery in the main body of stocks fol- lowing_the maintenance of the New York Federal Reserve re-discount rate at the 3!, per cent figure had reas- sured speculative sentiment, this feel- ing was not so much in evidence today. United States Steel was down a point from where it left off Friday, Youngstown dropped almost 2 points, while the other independents, notably Bethlehem, Crucible and American Steel Foundaries were sympathetically lower. In the motor group, Hudson was well maintained above the 85 level, but General Motors in plentiful supply at_lower prices. Montana Power came within a small fraction of reaching the objective of 150 commonly mentioned for the stock, but felt the effect of realizing later. Mining shares were featured by a suds den run-up in Patino Mines, which were carried to their highest since list- ing. Its activity was coincident with reports of the formation of a pool to exploit the stock. Shorts in Greene Cananea were still finding it difficult to extricate them- selves. Gold Dust Corporation and Standard Milling held remarkably firm in face of the sharp improvement earller in the week. The interests said to have been responsible for much of the buying in these issues are reputed to haye become actively interested in Remington Rand, which was carried forward to a new high for the move today. A. M. Byers suifered with most other speclalties as a result of profit- taking. Among low-priced issues Auto Sales responded with a new high record to the pronounced improvement in earn- ings for 1927, which were equal to about 80 cents a share, as against only 1 cent a share in the previous 12 months.
