By tha Associated Press. LACLEDE, Mo.. January 27.—A visit to the scenes of his birth and boyhood | here by Gen. John J. Pershing has been | followed by a declaration that he will | stay out of politics. | Citizens of Laclede as a tribute to the | village's famous citizen vesterday sug- | gested that he run for President of the | | United States. Rev. Frank A. Tinney. pastor of the Methodist Church, in de- | | livering an address of welcome at a banquet dwelt on history in which sev- eral famous generals became President. “Gen. Pershing.” he said in conclu- sion, “we hope become a candidate for President. You are the choice of all those present.” Appears IIl at Ease. Seemingly ill at ease, Gen. Pershing picked his words carefully and sald: “I am not in politics, and do not talk politics and will not permit myself to be drawn into politics. Therefore such dis- cussions must end so far as I am con. cerned.” After the banquet, when a reception was held, the general declared his day here was “one of the happiest of my life,” and that the women of the Meth- odist Church were “undoubtedly the best cooks in the world.” The banquet followed & busy half day in which Gen. Pershing with an old school chum. John Crowder. stole away from the crowds and arm in arm saun- tered down to the “old swimming hole,” a cave and the site of an old play hut, which was built and used by Pershing | as a boy long before he went away to the wars.
