January 24.—Col. ] commander of the Virginia grand camp of United Confederate Veterans and ! commander of the Stonewall Jackson | camp of this city for many years, died | here last night at 9:30 o'clock as the, result of a fall last week. Col. Allen suffered a broken rib nnd torn ligaments last Wednesday in al fall down a flight of concrete steps at the Stonewall Jackson Grammar School, across the street from his home. Col. Allen went through the entire | Civil War and was on Gen. Lee’s stafl at Appomattox. He volunteered for | service at 17 years of age, and served | in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, McCaus- | land’s brigade. Col. Allen has held many 1mpomntl positions. For several years from 1885 he was clerk of the United States Sen- ate. He was at varlous times auditor | of public accounts for Virginia, deputy ' collector of internal revenue. United States marshal by appointment of | President McKinley for 10 years from ! 1897, and from 1910 to 1 master of Staunton by appointment of President Taft. | For the past 13 years Col. Allen has | been retired, devoting his energy to! Confederate veterans’ work. He was| elected grand commander of the Vir-| ginia grand camp last June. He has been an elder in the Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years. Col. Allen is a native of Green Valley, Bath County.
