By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 24.—The cot- ton market opened steady today at an advance of 2 points to a decline of 3 points. A few overnight trade buying orders were brought in by the slight rally late yesterday, but offerings in- creased after the call when there was a renewal of liquidation with local and Southern selling inspired by relatively easy showing of Liverpool. Prices eased off to 1 for March and 18.36 for May, net declincs of 7 to 9 points on active months. but cover: ing steadied prices at the lower levels. Tiverpool cables reported hedging and continental liquidation in the market there, with a generally bearish average of sentiment. Some trade buying developed as prices approached 1830 for May con- tracts, and there were rallies of 8 or 10 points from the lowest on covering. Offerings, however, creased on the bulges and the market was barely steady within a point or two of the low- ost at midday. or around 1833 for May. Continued talk of prospects for a substantial increase in acrcage and reports of a trend toward increased curtailment of yarn and cloth output in France, continental countries and Japan were probably factors on the de- cline. Within four years later American investors had financed the English victory over the Boers and the Japgnese victory over Russia. Thus, for the first time in financial history, American money ‘entered into active competition with the money of London, Paris and Rotterdam. As everyone knows, America now does the banking for virtually the entire world. The volume of American money represented in civil and private foreign issues—not counting those of Canada—is scarcely less than is represented in domestic public utilities. The House of Hambleton, because of its elaborate and far reaching mechanism for the dis- tribution of foreign bonds, has earned a favored place upon the syndicate lists of the most notable houses engaged in foreign finance.
