TELEVISION SETS PROMISED SUCGESS Production of Simpler Mech- anism For House Use | Is Forecast. ‘Television in & newly advanced stage ‘has been successfully demonstrated. providing the latest miracle in radio's development. Although many phases of Tadio vision have been worked out by various inventors at home and abroad, there are none for which the same .claims have _een made as for Dr. E. F. W. Alexanderson's “home set” recently demonstrated by the General Electric Co. at Schenectady. Moving pictures of & man smoking a Ctigarette and mother playing a uku- lele were shown through' 3-by-3-inch apertures in bulky elblneu contatning the mechan: high-speed light by radio. “Their voices were synchro- mized with the pictures on ordinary loud speakers standing next to the television cabinets. so that those who attended the demonstration at three different places saw and heard their features and Voices reproduced quite naturally. The construction of the cabinets presages the introduction of even| simpler sets in the homes of the land | ‘within a few years, David Sarnoff, gen- eral manager of the Radio Corporation ©of America, predicted. The inventor himself. one of radio’s great pioneers, modestly referred to the demonstration as being “the starting point of prac- um I popular television.” . & T. Co., at its Whip- | zln\' N. J.. laboratories, demonstrated | levision last vear, suggesting its po- tentialities, and great interest was roused when the features and voice of | bert Hoover were carried over the wires from Washington. Other experi menters are working on the transmis- | sion of both still and motion pictures | by radio, with varying claims as to results. For example, Laird, the Scotch in- ventor, has been so successful with his experiments in England that it is re- ported he proposes visiting the United States to demonstrate his apparatus and possibly to attempt flashing motion ;mum across the Atlantic. C. Francis fenkins, the Washington inventor, ‘whose weather wp by radio has been Naty vessels and on the dirigible Los Angeles, recently pre- dicted that it was only a matter of months before movies be received in the home via radio on moderately priced sets. Mr. Jenkins, who has been woking on the problem many years, said that *vision by radio is simply a more rapid transmission of objects which have been translated into electrical energy and at distant Imims changed back into a facsimile of the original, whether nbe-nmmcumor-pmm in ac- Pncflully all of the television and facsimile work is done on short wa: Alexande! committee, in a join discussion on the Subject “Some Historic Presidential | paigns.” mwoumrmummnw toric differences between the two par- ties, m{:lum&mnfzxv&(:wm;‘lg: presidential campaign some mwmm‘mmwnmv ‘lhe Eveready hour, to be heard through WRC 9 o'clock, will fe: lfl‘l:?lh:hfl“ Tt as Dhn'% wlomh Miss been_engaged to play the “Becond Plano Concerw” by Saint- ism for reproducing the | transmissions which | make possiblé the reception of pletures | Hester Walker Beale, well known Washington dramatic reader and a product of the Leiand-Powers School of Boston. will be heard over WRC at WRHP will u A 7 dance program by George bxncmra and | his Congressionais, while WMAL'S chief | attraction is the weekly radio club. Recently She Was Heard Through WRHF. CHILDLABORBILL INDORSED BY GRUUP Resolution Favoring Capper | Measure. A resolution favoring the Cappor! child labor bill, providing for greater| restrictions on child labor in the Dis- trict of Columbia and definite means for dealing with violations of it, was adopted by the Monday Evening Club| at a meeting in the Y. W. C. A. Build- | mgh Seventeenth and K streets, last, night. The bill, which has been referred to make it uniawful for any minor under | 14 years of age to be employed in any | gainful occupation, except agricultural or housework performed directly for the | side of school hours or in connection with the child’s own home. There is| an . exception in that boys of 12 years of age or over may distribute news- papers, magazines or periodicals on fixed routes, subject to the provisions of the act The action of the club followed a general address on the bill by Mml Clara Montensen Beyer, lho strongly | advocated its enactment. “The present child labor law has a minimum age of 10 for selling, with no provisions at all for carriers, permits work until 10 pm., and it carries no penalty provision | is practically impossible of enforce- | ment,” Mrs. Beyer said. She declared ' that it has been said that chiidren 9| and i1 years of age have sold news papers in front of a large local hotel up to a late hour at night. The latter statement was substantiated by Miss| o Fay Bentley, director of the depart-| ment of school attendance and work ! schools. An a was delivered at the meeting by Dr.| Frank W. Ballou, who declared that the opportunities for specially training boys and girls for vocations and trades is limited much more in the Dhmet‘ than In other cities. He described, however, progress made toward that end here, pointing out that ihe tend- ency in recent years has been more | and more toward specially mmmu pupils for some f.llnhll occupation by the time they finish junior hl‘h lchool or high school, rather than to prepare | them mm{ for college. Dr. Bal declared he 18 heartily 'In favor of child labor legislation for | the District, adding that the school authorities are trying to administer the resent law, but that “it is not an ef- ective child labor law." Mrs. Margaret Ford, Miss Bertha Israel, Mrs. Leonard B. Schloss and Thomas 8. Settle were elected members of the club. Walter 8.
