HUGHES. al Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 14.—An irreg- ular downward trend predominated in today's stock market. There was no weakness, and individual issues here and there were able to make progress upward, but they were exceptions. Iividently stock bought on the break earlier In the week was coming hack | on the market, and there was not <uffi- clent short covering to offset the sell- ing. Tke volume of trading was | larger than yesterday. As far as the news was any influ- ence, the subject of brokers’ loans | was still uppermost. | Congressional Investigation, The Street was iInterested in Wash- | ington reports about a congressional investigation covering the amount of | money used in speculation and the | suggestion that the Federal Reserve | authorities would forestall political ac- | tion by raising the rediscount rate. | On the other side it was urged that the real measure of the money situa- | tion was not the total of brokers' loans, but the rate of call funds. Another uncertainty was the motor | car outlook. Admitting satisfactory sales of new cars, there was stil doubt as to profits. Motor 8tocks | were uniformly heavy today. Nor| was there any enthusiasm over the | improvement in the steel trade. The | shares of U. S. Steel and the inde-| pendents sagged. Elsewhere in the | list a few of the railroads worked | higher and some of the utilities were well supported. Lehigh Valley in Demand. Lehigh Valley was noticeably in demand, presumably in connection with merger possibilities, certainly not on earnings. Bangor & Aroo- stook was firm and so w: t. Louis- San Francisco. Of the ut s North American seemed to be well bought. ‘The local electric light and power and gas stocks were resting after their recent rise. In the specialty group Radio had an opening jump, apparently the re. sult of hasty short covering, for the stock came down once the initial de- mand had been satisfied. Interna- | tlonal Mercantile Marine preferred sold around its recent high, respond- ing to analysis of its asset value. Greene Cananea fluctuated through its usual wide range, but with the net result a loss. High-priced stocks | such as United States Cast Iron Pipe | and Case Threshing Machine sold off | 3 and 4 points easily. | The low prices were made in (he‘i last half hour. when the selling was the heaviest and the most effective. Both General Motors and United States Steel yielded to the pressure, | showing los: of 2 points or more. The close was unsettied. POTATO MART WEAKER. CHICAGO.
