BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispateh to The Star, NEW YORK, December 28.—After a day of irrcgular and uncertain price movements, with alternating periods of weakness and strength, the selling got the upper hand in the last hour and stocks came down fairly uni- formly. The low prices of the session were made toward the close. United States Steel, which was heavy all day, was down 2 points, and General Motors, which had been rela- tively firm, lost almost as much. The railroads suffered in the late liquida- tion along with the industrials— Chesapeake & Ohio, Bakimore & Ohio and New York Central. Even the high-priced Midland Steel Products preferred, which was the sensation of v, lost a part of its gain. Corn and Wheat Up on Firm Cables and Bad Weather in - Coarse Cereal Belt. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 28.—Influenced by relative firmness of Liverpool wheat quotations and by unfavorable weather in the corn belt, grain prices tended upward early today. Buying, however, was chiefly of a scattering character. Opening at % to % higher, wheat later scored some additional gains. Corn started unchanged to 3, up, and subsequently made a mod- erate general advance. Oats were firmer. Provislons inclined . to sag. Advices current today from a rec- ygnized trade authority said heavy European requirements for wheat dur- ng the Winter and Spring are con- firmed and will have to be furnished ‘rom exporters’ supplies, which. how- sver, also are large. According to this same source of information, though, -he requirements may offset the avail- able supplies unless Argentine ship- ments should prove to be of sufficient volume to overwhelm the buyers’ market. In addition to adverse weather like y to interfere with the movewnen: of orn from rural districts. comparative smaliness of receipts today at leading Nz ly the xreatest interest at- hed to the action of United States teel, because of the announcement after the close Tuesday of the elec- tion of J. P. Morgan as chairman of the board. Steel stock opened frac- tionally up, but quickly secld off, ab- dicating its leadership to other fav- orites. The feeling seemed to be tnat all the “news was out” with regard to Steel, for the time being at least, and there was nothing more to stimulate speculation. Moreover, it was begin ning to be realized that the talk of ad- ditional stock dividends, split-ups and other “melons” was likely to remain talk and nothing more. Market Has Sensations. The market did have its sensations, however. All the local utilities were bought at rapldly advancing prices, all of them at new highs for a decade or more. Brooklyn Edison at 219 erminals gave considerable strength it times to the corn market. Corn arrivals at Chicago today were of only fair volume, 198 cars, and at Kansas Jity and Omaha were but 38 cars and 71 cars, respectively. COTTON GOODS ACTIVE. NEW YORK, December 28 (Spe- clal).—Cotton goods markets were moderately active today at unchanged prices. Print. cloths were quoted at 815 for 64x60s, and at 9% for.68x72s. Raw silks were unchanged in an active market. RUBBER STOCKS DROP. NEW YORK, December 28 °(#).— Rubber stocks in London on Decem- ber 24 totaled 63,397 tons, a decrease of 1,364 tons from the week before. 1010 Vermont Ave. 1st Trust Loans Any Amount D. Seldom even in this market of wild fluctuations has there been anything comparable. The stock had closed at 27%, which repre- sented a rise of 221 points from Sat- urday’s close. ,Advancing bty leaps and bounds it crossed 300 and then went 15 points farther until it was showing a net gain of nearly 42 points on the day. The market was so ex- cited that variations of as much as 4 points between sales were noted. No explanation that concerned itself sole- ly with trade conditions was at al! adequate for this phenomenon. Irregularity Elsewhere. Elsewhere in the market there was irregularity. General Motors sold off in the early trading and then more than regained the loss. General Elec- tric was very strong. Christie Brown was another specialty to sell at a new 1927 top. Railroad shares felt the in- fluence of the depressing November earnings statements and yet they were not weak. In fact, in the after- noon some of them showed advances. New York Central was well bought and Baltimore & Ohio sold off only fractionally despite its heavy loss in gross and net. One direct response to the news was the b g of Pan-American Petro- leum “B.” Action of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies on the ofl and land bill was interpreted as the begin- ning of better things for American ofl companies with interests in Mexi- co. The stock gained between 2 and 3 points. Except for the New York City Elec- tric Light & Gas stocks, the market turned somewhat reactionary in the afternoon. Trading was in smaller volume, Steel yielded, but General Motors held generally fairly well. The sugar stocks did Dbetter, especlally Cuban-American Sugar and South Porto Rico. White Motor was a fea- ture on the side of advance.
