20 JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER STARTS DRIVE Goal of 8,000 Members Set for Second Annual Enroll- ment Campaign. The first meeting of workers in the second annual enroliment of the Jew- 4sh Community Center was held in conjunction with an open meeting of the Hadassah vesterday afternoon, at the Center, Sixteenth and Q streets. ‘More than 100 workers, divided into 20 teams, were given instructions as to the conduct of the two weeks' cam- paign for 3,000 members by Louis E. Spicgler, chairman of the drive, and Maurice Bisgver, director of the Cen- ter. Miss Susan Brandeis, daughter of the Supreme Court Justice, speaking at the Hadassah meeting, urged those present to support more liberally the Jewish National Fund movement for the purchase of land in Palestine. She said that 31 thriving National Fund colonies had been established in the valley of Enoch, and pointed out that immigration to the Holy Land cannot increase until the land is de veloped to take care of the immigrant. A one-act playlet, depicting the ad- vantages of the Community Center was presented by Mrs. Anna Alpher, Miss Hilda Levy and Milton Kerman A solo was given by Mrs. Clara Wise- man. accompanied the plano by Mrs. Louls J. No Mrs. Joh Safer, president of Hadassah, presided. She urged the members to attend the Chanukah celebration, to be held dext Tuesday evening, at the First Street Syna. gogue, under auspices of the Center, as a feature of the enrollment drive. A oneact play, “The Youngest Son of Hannah,” will be presented at this function by the Sixth Street Syna- gogue Players. PARDONED PRISONER APOLOGIZES TO VICTIM By the Assoclated Press. MEMPHIS, December 26.—A young man walked into the Bank of Com- merce Saturday and sought out Abe Goodman, Memphis capitalist. “Do you remember me?” he asked. Goodman didn't. “I am Roland Klussman, who rob- bed your home and threatened your life on the night of October 5, 1922. Gov. Horton has pardoned me and I arrived today to beg your pardon, also.” Goodman shook hands with the voung man, introduced him araund and offered him financial assistance, but Klussman refused aid. He prom- ised to write Goodman every six months and said he was en route to Oklahoma to remain with his mother as long as she lived. “The only reason we didn’t kill you that night,” Klussman said, “was that it would have caused too great a dis- wounded and captured Klussman. Klussman and his companion were frightened off that night, but returned later to get some loot they had con- cealed in the yard. RECAPTURED CONVICT BLAMES WARDEN’S TREE Work of Trimming It Made Him Think of Children at Home, He Says. By the Associated Press. OSSINING, N. Y., December 26.— Decorating a Christmas tree in the home of Warden Lewls E. Lawes made Ralph de Salvo, a trusty at Sing Sing prison, think of his three children and he started for home yesterday. ‘Within 16 minutes he had been cap- tured by a policeman. “It was foolish of me, warden,” De Salvo sald when brought back, “but you know how it is. It i{s Christmas morning, and I have kids of my®own. I just felt I had to go.” De Salvo has served four years and a half of & 10 to 20 year sentence for robbery. e . PLOTTERS ARRESTED. Portuguese General Exiled for Con- spiracy Against Dictator. LONDON, December 26 (#).—Many important persons were arrested re- cently in Portugal on charges of con: spiracy against the present dictator- ship, it is rellably stated in London. News of these arrests are rarely al lowed to pass the Portuguese censor. The latest one arrested was Gen. Norton De Mattos, who was charged with being involved in the revolution of last February.
