Larger Cotton Acreage Forecast. That Southern planters are reserv- ing a larger acreage for next year’s cotton crop than they did for the 1927 crop is indicated by a slight decline in shipments of fertilizer in Southern territory during August, September and October, according to a report Percy H. The decline in Fall shipments in Southern territory is interpreted by the association to indicate that a smaller acreage of Fallsown grains has been planted, and that a larger acreage has been reserved for cotton. Chain Store Sales Increasing. According to a survey made public today by the Chain Store Research Bureau, the 66,750 grocery chains in this country at present will show an annual volume of $2,356,250,000 at the close of the current year. Of this amount $683,312,000, or approximately 29 per cent of the aggregate total, will be realized on six leading staples. These are butter, coffee, sugar, eggs, bread dnd flour. The realization of this annual total will mark an increase over last year's figures of $326,250,000, of which $75, 000,000 is due to the addition of meat departments in the large grocery chains. At the rate that these stores are adding meat departinents the in- crease is likely to be still larger dur- ing 1928. School Bank Handlés $300,000. To take care of the mnoey of the girl students at National Park Semi- nary, Forest Glen, and to teach banking methods in a most practical way, the seminary maintains a school bank. This bank is described in de- tail by Frederick P. H. Siddons, sec- retary of the American Security & Trust Co., in the last issue of the Burroughs Clearing House. As much as $300,000 has passed through this school bank in one year. The checks are not negotiable outside the school, but the institution is carried on as a regular bank. The girls make out de- posit slips, deposit and draw their funds from regular windows at cer- tain hours. Dr. James E. Ament, who originated the idea, reports that the girls get a very practical knowl- edge in the handling of their finances. Heard in Financial District. The Treasury Department reports only $13,377,446 now in the vaults, the smallest sum in 10 years. During the year the average balance has been be- tween $70,000,000 and $100,000,000,* the present decline being due to the large retirement of second Liberty loan bonds. ‘The report of the Washington Rapid Transit Co. recently filed with/the Pub- lic Utilities Commission shows a_total valuation of $868,900.53 on all classes of property, real estate and equipment. Of this amount $31,029.61 covers the company’s holdings and equipment used in Maryland. Thirty-one new de luxe busses occupy a prominent place in the report. These were recently purchased from the Yellow Coach Co. of Chicago at a cost of $260,505.04. State and municipal bond election results published in the Daily Bond Buyer during the month of November indicate that the taxpayeérs of 160 com- munities authorized the issuance of bonds aggregating $127,623,950. This large total for last month is due to the fact that many bond proposals are presented to the vofers at the general elections in November. The total for November, 1926, was $198,098,410. o OIL OUTPUT GAINS. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 5—In a much mixed stock market today the sellers had the better of it in the morning, while the buying side gained the upper hand in the afternoon. Money, which had renewed at 41 dropped to 4 per cent just hefore 2 o'clock and that helped the recovery. The leaders in the afternoon were the mail order and agricultural stocks. 0Oil shares were weak. Atlantic Re- fining broke badly directly at the start, showing a los of between 5 and 6 points, with only an unimportant rally subsequently. This had an un- favorable effect on oils and fractional declines were recorded by a long list of them, with an even greater loss in Pan-American Petroleum “B.” Texas Corporation resisted the selling. News about the oil trade was confined to a falling off in Seminole output and an increase in California production. The market today, however, seemed to have in mind the unpleasant reading that the reports for the full year 1927 are sure to make. Specialty Weak Spots. There were other weak spots, most | of them in the specialty group. One of them was American Linse which was heavily sold. Then an r hole” developed in the market for United States Industrial Alcohol, which dropped 4 points, although coming back partially afterward. Stewart ‘Warner was down and the Continental Baking stocks, class “A" and class “B,” lost ground rapidly Or the other hand the motor stocks were well supported. General Motors for a time was higher, but it came down later in the day; it did not seem to be under pressure. There was no outstanding weakness in the stocks of the independents either, while White Motors was strong. In other words, there was nothing in the action of the automobile stocks to indicate any con- cern over the reports of the competi- tive situation. Rails Are Irregular. Coming to the railroads, irregular- ity was the rule here also. Pennsyl- vania was a shade higher and it was pointed out that this was one sea- soned dividend payer which had not been advanced in proportion to the others. In fact, Pennsylvania now gives the largest return of any stock in its class. Canadian Pacific was in demand, again moving up briskly, but not holding all its gain. Delaware & Hudson and Norfolk & Western were evidently resting. The new system of reporting sales on the tape was given another trial. As traders became more familiar with it complaints were not so numerous. The chief objection was that it re- quired constant attention in order to be sure just what price stocks were bringing when everything but the last figure and the fraction was left out. The tape kept up with the mar- ket easily. Transactions, however, were pot as large as in recent ses- sions. o TRADE BROUGHT IN. NEW YORK, December 5 (#).— Youngstown dispatches say the re- cent price advance in shapes, bars and plates has been instrumental in driv- ing in much new business, buyers be- ing axious to cover on this year's re- quirements at 1.75 cents a pound. The price advance by Wheeling Steel, to be followed by other makers, likewise is exerting a stimulating effect on the market. STEEL SCRAP ADVANCES. NEW YORK, December 5 (#).— Heavy melting steel scrap has been advanced 25 cents a ton in the Chicago district, quotations now ranging from $1L.75 to $12.25. COTTON GOODS ACTIVE. NEW YORK, December 5.—Cotton goods markets were moderately active at the start of the week at higher prices. Print cloth quotations were marked up 3% at 8 cents for 64x60s and up % at 9 cents for 68x72s. Raw silks were unchanged in an active L Victor ev pf (6). 111% 108% Vietor pr pt (7). Va-Caro Chem..
