B, Appears at Auditorium Under Auspices of Local Churches. A lecture on “Christian Science and the Ideal Church” was delivered yes- terday afternoon in the Washington Auditorium by Bliss Knapp, C. S. B., of Brookline, Mass., before a large audience. ir. Knapp is a member of the of Lectureship of the Mother h, the Kirst Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, He was intro- duced by Dr. Frank F. Bunker, first reader of Third Church of this city. The lecture was under auspices of the four Chr Science churches of this_ city. The lecturer said, in part: “The Christian Science Church is founded on the teachings of Christ Jesus, and the first tenet of the Mother Church reads as follows: ‘As adherents of truth, we take the in- spired Word of the Bible as our suf- ficient guide to eternal life.” “We are taught in Christian Sclence to think of God as the one ‘supreme intelligence’ governing the universe and man, but this teaching accords with the spiritual view of the Bible. The writer of the Epistle to the He- brews clearly states that David and the prophets subdued kingdoms * * ¢ obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, etc., through faith in the one God. So T must explain, for the sake of clarifying our viewpoint, that I shall not speak of material forces, nor of electricity, but I shall speak of faith and spiritual understanding, which are qualities of the ‘supreme intelligence,” and which enabled Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and found- er of Christian Science, to reinstate primitive Christian healing. “One might serlously question, with the hundreds of Ch: lan denomina- tions already in existence, why Mrs. Eddy should have started another church. She believed that during the past 2,000 years the warfare of the Christlan churches against sin would have been more effectual if they had not dropped the element of Christian healing. That was her reason for organizing, in 1879, the Christian Sci- ence Church, “The Christ healing has always ex- isted as a sign of God’s presence and power, and Mary Baker Eddy has stated the science of that healing in her book, ‘Science and Health.” Christian Science is vital to men and women, because it explains a prac- tical and scientific way to achieve one's own salvation. It explains all cause and effect as mental, and that sin, disease and death are overcome by a full and complete understanding of that principle which enabled Christ Jesus to heal the sick and raise the dead.” WIFE HUNT.S “SUICIDE.” Man Answering Husband’s Descrip- tion Seen in Canada.
