FINANCIADL FOUR GROUPS GAIN IN BOND MARKET iPrices All Through List Rise Above Any Previous Aver- age This Year. RY CHARLES F. SPEARE, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December was greater variety in today market than has been shown for sev- eral weeks. The demand for good =e- curities being urgent, prices ull through the list advanced above any previous average this year. Four groups of honds made notable gains. These were United States Treasury long terms, the new public utility and railroad 4% per cent mort- gages, German municipal, industrial and bank issues and the semispecu- Jative rails. | though Governments have ad- vanced steadily until the return is| well below 314 per cent, thg absorpt:on by institutions and wealthy investors goes on. The popularity of the per cent issue, Which sold tod: around 102%. where it yields about 3.15, undoubtedly is due to the thI! that it carries the smallest premium of any of this group. There are many | investors who do not care to buy, the 4%s. which are selling above i, or the 4s, about 110%. Utilities Buoyant. The buoyancy of such public utility | 41, per cent bonds as those of the Philadelphia Electric and Duquesne Light, which were both up to 101. rep- resenting an advance of 2 to 2% points over their issue price. was duplicated in other 4% per cent issues put out yecently by the railroads. In the past | four months there have been sold £350.000,000 par value of corporation honds carrying a 412 per cent coupon Of the 15 separate issues. practically | a1l have gone to a premium, With the | Mobile and Ohio 4328 today about 412 points over the initial price. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas new prior lien 2159 sold at 99% today to retire the 6s at 1021, subsequently went above | ar. Pt may be said that In almost every jnstance where a 4% per cent bond was floated between July 1 and De- cember 1, criticism was made of the | high price at which the issue was offered. ! The subsequent action of this group, however, supports the judg- ment of the houses that distributed them. In this respect they were closer to the buyers' ideas of values than when they sold various European dol- lar bonds. German Bonds Recover. The important incident in the for- elgn market today was the recovery in nearly all of the German municipal, public utility and industrial issues. Some of them were up % to 1 point. The German Central Bank issues rallied sharply and at one time showed | a recovery of 1% points from the re- cent low. There has been excellent jnvestment trust buying of the 6s about 4 points under the syndicate price. ! Italian issues had a tendency to droop as the Street does not like the political situation in Southeastern Furope in which Italian policies are involved. . BUTTER STEADY. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNA Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 2.—Follow- ing yesterday's record-breaking volume of business, trading on the Curb Ex- change today continued excited, with speculative enthusiasm keyed to a high pitch. Profit taking, however, caused some selling, with the result that the movement was hichly ir- regular at intervals. The increase of almost $30.000,000 in the latest brokers' loans figures, which brought the total to a new peak, failed to have an adverse effect upon speculative sentiment. Even with the call loan renewal rate up to 41 per cent again, the market failed to be affected. It was moving under the momentum gathered on previous days. Ford Motor of Canada scored an overnight gain of points, but sub- sequently dropped sharply between sales offsetting most of the improve- ment. Firestone Tire lost its place of prominence, but other leaders were brought forward and bid up sharply. One of these was Mengel Co., which went into new high ground on re- ports of greatly improved earnings. Another was United Electric Coal at top prices and the rights to subscribe to_additional stock. The sharp upturn in Borden Co. was predicated on the idea that under the terms of the consolidation with Reid Ice Cream the stock was en- titled to sell at higher levels. Another high-priced specialty that moved forward readily was Libby- Owens Co, despite the fact that net for the common in the year ended Sen- tember 30 was equal to $6.74 a share, against $8.71 in the preceding year. Associated Gas & Electric fea- tured the utilities on the side of ad- vance, crossiing 50 to its best prices. Lone Star gas, on the other hand, suf- fered a sharp break following the an- nouncement that a stockholders’ meet. ing has heen called to vote on an in- crease in the authorized capital stock from $30,000,000 to $50,000,000. The purpose of the increase was not stated, DROP AT LIVERPOOL DEPRESSES WHEAT Bearish Estimates of Argentina Exportable Surplus Factor in Weakness Abroad. By the Associated Press.
