HUCE AUTO TRAFF TESTSNEW TUMNEL Estimated Capaclty Exceed- ed by 200 Cars an Hour. Ventilating System Praised. By the Amsociated Press. NEW YORK, November 14.—Traffic ‘that exceeded the estimated capacity of the new Holland vehicilar tunnel Ibetween New York and New Jersey by 200 an hour yesterday sub- jected the ventilating system of the ube to a test which proved it three times as eflicient as had been ex- ipected, officials sa Between t e the tunnel was opened at 12:01 a.m. yesterday and 4 . 28,000 vehicles passed under the iver hetween Manhattan and 3 . Morris M. Rrolich, secre- tary of the New York Bridge and Tunnel Commission, announced. At such a rate 42,000 vehicles would pass through the tunnel within 24 hours, he said. The ventilating system was pro- nounced perfect by Frolich, who said that instead of the expected four parts of carbon monoxide to 10,000 parts of fresh air there had been, even dur- ing the greatest rush, not more than 1.8 parts poison gas to the measure of fresh air. 1.3 parts of carbon monoxide were Present in 10,000 parts of air, he said. The tube is ventilated by 84 large blowers, which circulate fresh air from & channel under the floor of the tun- nel and exhaust impure air through an overhead passage. The air circu- lates transversely, so that there is no draft through the tube. :EAST CAPITOL STREET EXTENSION IS SOUGHT Citizens of Capitol Heights Reor- ganize Association to Work for Direct Route to D. C. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star, CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md., Novem- ber 14.—With its chief aim to secure extension of East Capitol street to the District line, the Capitol Heights Citizens’ association has just reorgan- ized, with Rollin Reno as temporary chairman. It is pointed out reorgani- zation of the project would mean a direct route between the Capital City and the rapidly developing Maryland section to the east, and would be a saving of about two miles over any route now available. The Anacostia River would have to be bridged. A committee to handle the matter soon will be named. Representatives of the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. will demon- strate the working of a switchboard before a meeting of the association to be held Wednesday night. It has been decided by the associa- tion to offer prizes of $5, $3 and $1 to pupils of the Capitol Heights School or the Maryland Park High School for essavs on “How Can We Arouse the Civic Interest in Our Community?"” prsiimib ol ) i Cumberland Gets Pastor. _Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. The full fury of war will be turned loose at an early date against a modern concrete bridge across the Peedes river between Albemarle and Mount Gilead, N. C. Placed bombs, air bombs and high explo- sive shells will be used to destroy the structure, completed in 1922 at a cost of approximately a quarter of a million dollars. The bridge will be submerged as a result of the construction of a dam across the river near Norwood by the Carolina Power & Light Co. It would be an obstruction to naviga- tion if it remained and, in co-opera- tion with the State authorities, the War Department announced yester- day that Army aircraft, engineers and artillery would be used to de- stroy two of the three 150-foot spans, while the State Highway Commis- sion would test the third span to the breaking point by imposing tanks of water upon it until it collapsed. The military tests have been devised to furnish actual information on sev- eral points. Engineer Corps bombs and other explosives will be placed to test the explosive formulae for demoli- tion of re-enforced concrete and also to determine the best place for plac- ing charges to destroy bridges of this type.Field guns will be emploved as Coal Mines Reopen.
