12 & TREND [RREGULAR ON STOCK MARKET Shares Put to Test—Early Trade Sees Advances—Fa- vorites Uncertain. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 14.—The Stock Market was subjected to some- thing of a test today. The recovery of last week had eliminated a large part of the short interest and at the same time had increased the outside following. The result was the tech- nical position had impaired. Nevertheless, in the main the market of itself. ines in some been ga’e a good account changes were mixed, dec] of the pivotal stocks being accompa nied by further advances in special ties. an accumulation of orders based on the showing the list made on Satur- day. Advances were the rule and in | the first hour or two a number of | new high records were hung un,j Among them were American Railway | Express, which jumped nearly 6 points | to the highest for all time; Montgom- ery Ward and S s Roebuck, toth at the best for the present shares, and American C: 10 the hest for the 5 mer- Ny all included Best & | , Julius Ka r | Favorites Are Y'ncertain. . Meanwhile the old industrial fa Tvorites, steel, General Motors and Gen- “eral Electric, had heen moving more uncertainly. Steel was a shade high ler at the start, but did not hold the gain. General Electric was some. imes higher and sometimes lower 4han the preceding close, and not ®specially active. General Motors | ivielded more than either of the other | $wo, selling on the theory that “the 00d news was out,” proving effective. As far as there was any significant rhange in stocks of the independent utomobile companies it was on the ide of decline. % Al this did not mean that the mar- et was making any reappraisal of the rade outlook. It was simply a read- ustment of a speculative position that ad been temporarily overbought. usiness news was mostly encouras- Sng, especially that relating to the Isteel industry. £ When the general list faltered the Fopper stocks were taken up and buy- Ing of Anaconda, Kennecott, Calumet 2nd Arizona went on confidently. Re- #ned stocks of copper at the close of DOctober were the lowest of the year. The market for the metal was regard as strengthened that much. Be- fides those already mentioned. Greene nanea and Magma swung into line Jater in the session. 3 Tobacco More Irregular. 2 The tobacco stocks were more irres- mlar, but one or two of them were putstandingly stronz. Bayvuk Cigar “®0ld up nearly 5 points to the highest ince listing. Lorillard was another this gzroup in demand today. In the agricultural class International Harvester stood out up more than 7 ints at 247, and a new record high For all time. Last week Harvester #ained more than 23 points. > The rails were little disturbed by #he selling that went on elsewhere. Southern Railway made another new ‘high, receding, however, later on, and Chesapeake & Ohio went ahead, taking LChesapeake Corporation along with it SUGAR TONE IS FIRM. Futures Are Active and Prices Ad- vance 4 to 6 Points Today. NEW YORK, November 14 (P).— No sales were reported in the raw Bugar market early today, but the un- ‘@ertone was firm, refiners, showing in- ‘erest at last, paid price of 4.65 for nearby Cuban and holders asking 4.71. Raw sugar futures were firm and active, reflecting the sharp advance in London and private cables from Paris stating that an agreement would be signed this afternoon between Ger- many, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Cuba restricting the production of sugar. Prices advanced 4 to 6 points ‘on active covering and buying by both “European and Cuban interests, but sthere was a good deal of realizing on dthe upturn and partial setbacks fol- Howed, with midday prices 3 to 4 points “net higher. I.The refined sugar market was un fohanged at 5.80 for fine granulated. “Withdrawals were of fair proportions, “but new business was light. GRAIN EXPORTS. NEW YORK, November 14 (#).— ‘Exports of grain from Argentina this year are expected to reach 14,550,000 fons, consular reports indicate. Ex- ‘ports for the first nine months of the year were 12,250,000 tons. : SUN OIL STOCK DIVIDENDS.
