BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 10.—Sever- al sharp declines intermingled with further price appreciation in the se- lected specialties and pool favorites made up the outstanding incidents in today's curb market trading. The movement of particular In- terest was the abrupt break in U S, Gypsum common. Dropping below 90, it established a new low for the year around 88, where the price compared with Wednesday’s final of 99. Heavy selling followed the action of directors in declaring an extra dividend of $1 a share on the common and the regu- lar quarterly 40 cents. This was taken as distinctly disappointing in view of the past liberal dividend policy of the directorate. A year ago, in_addition to declaring an extra dividend of $1.40 in cash, an extra of 35 per cent was declared in stock. Gold Seal Electric was another special object of attack, breaking from 21% to 17 on a heavy turnover. Inasmuch as dividends are paid at the annual rate of only 15 cents a share, the fact that the stock had a market value practically twice what it was early in the year was taken as indicating that speculation for the rise had overdiscounted what im- provement might have taken place in earnings. But while these issues were under pronounced pressure new high rec- ords were being established else where cuum Oil was i point, reaching a new top above 138. Those usually conservative in their calculations concerning market val- ues expressed the opinion that even if the much talked of 100 per cent stock dividend is declared and the new shares are placed on a $3 divi- dend basis, Vacuum stock at current prices was high enough. This would mean approximately $69 a share for a $3 dividend payer. Others pointed out that Standard Oil stocks and | bank stocks usually sell on a basis to vield from 2 to 3 per cent. This wollld mean a yield of more than 4 per cent for vicuum share owners. lllinois Pipe Line, another issue offering prospects for special stock distributions, went forward into new high ground. Alabama and Great Southern sold at its highest in re- sponse to declaration of an extra dividend of $1.50 a share in addition to the regular semi-annual $1.75 on the preferred and common. The mar- ket for Kemsley-Millbourn stock and bonds continued strong at new high prices, reflecting the improved earn- ings outlook. Predictions also were current that the official estimate tomorrow of the 1927 Canadian wheat vield would show a decided increase and there was talk, too, that a greater amount of acreage than usual has been prepared for next year’s Canadian crop. Although the corn merket today started easy. sympathizing with wheat. unfavorable weather led later to up- turns at times.
