BISHOP T0 ESCAPE TRIAL FOR HERESY Procedure Believed Too Rus- ty to Be Used in Present English Church Row. By A. G. GARDINER. | By Radio to The Star. C., \OCTOBiiJR- 23, PANIC IN BOURSE IN 5 YEARS PREDICTED FROM OLD POEM BY WILLIAM BIRD. By Radio to The Star. PARIS, October 22.—“France with- in five years of 1927 will undergo a change of regime. “The elections of 1928 will see the birth of a new ‘cartel’ far stronger than that of 1924. “A new leader will come forth from the southwestern part of the country. “The pound, instead of the franc, will become the national unit of cur- rency. In exchanging their francs for the new money, the French people | will have to sacrifice 10 per cent to the government. “The new regime will not at first be welcomed, and there will be a panic on the Bourse. But finally it will be the most glorfous regime that France his ever known. These prophecies were made in the sixteenth century by a mathematician named Michel de Notre-Dame, other- wise called Nostradamus, who pub- lished them in a cryptic poem that has puzzled scholars for 300 years A French savant, P. V. Piobb, has just announced that he has discov: ered the key to the mystery and lists the predictions above as among |2 the results of the search. nguage of Nostradamus, a8 's in his “Centuries and is a bizarre kind of seems to be almost mean- ugh here and there are h as the following, which are plain enough: An Emperor will be born near Who will cost the empir “He will be thought less than a butcher.” This is a striking enough portrait of the Corsican born Napoleon. Other passages in the poem appear to pre- dict the rise and fall of the Bourbons, including a prediction of the behead ing of Louis XVI—which in fact, is pictured on the title page of the Am- sterdam edition of 1668. Translation Is Necessary. M. Piobb says the first “‘secret of Nostradamus” is that his obscure ench verses must be translated into tin when they at once become ar. The second “secret™ Temple. Indeed M. Piobb believes that Nostradamus must have had access to the old Hebrew documents which disappeared from the ark of the covenant. The prophecies, says Mr. Piobb, were written in enigmatic form to in- sure their preservation. Had the books heen written in plain language, he declares, they would certainly have been burnt. He contends that the prophecies are founded on scientific bases, that there is nothing philosophi- cal in them and that they are merely a mathematical calculation of the future, based on a knowledge of sclen- tific laws. Among the many astonishing proph- ecies of Nostradamus M. Piobb finds many proper names, such as Dreyfus WANTED: 1927—PART 1. and Caillaux, artfully concealed to be sure, but readily discove:.d when one krows the key. ‘Thé name of the great mew leader who is to govern France is not re- vealed. The very verse of the poem which should contain the name is mysteriously incomplete. M. Cause of Protest. The immediate cause of the protest | at St. Paul's was his recent denun- ciations of the doctrine of trans; substantiation as ‘s ar " disprovable by u ence. Nowhere is the di scute than in St. Paul's itse Inge, who invited Dr. B: preach in the cathedral, denounces Canon Bullock Web who led the demonstration, as awler. Representative leaders of the En- glish Church Union demand that Barnes be tried for heresy. but as the | Jast heresy trial in the English Church took place more than two cen- turies ago, this rusty procedure is not likely to be adopted. Peace to Be Sought. The possibilities are that the Arch- | bishop of Canterbury will seek a| formula to escape the quarrekand re- store the appearance of peace, but this will be difficult in view of the | coming controversy in Parliament over a new prayer book. ‘Meanwhile the position of the church, | ¢torn by quarrels and undermined by scientific thought, is seriously preju- diced, and there is difficulty in finding enough candidates for ordination to keep the system supplied. It is not improbable that one of the results of the present state of civil war will be a movement toward disestablishment within the church itself. (Copyright. 1927.) —_— U. S.
