Still when ders found necessary to lighten ac- counts, they threw overboard railroad stocks to protect other holdings. There was no excuse for the selling in the outside situation. Estimates of the rate of production of the steel com- panies were reduced from those of a week ago, but that was not unexpect- ed. Money renewed at 4 per cent against 4% per cent renewal rate on the day before. Credit was in abund- ant supply. Just after noon call funds were obtainable at 3% per cent. It was not money. but the internal condi- tion of the market with which traders were concerning themselves. Rallies Inconsequential. Despite the 3% per cent call money rate the market continued weak in the afternoon.” Activity fell off at in- tervals, but the rallies were inconse- quential. Up to this tim> the low quotations of the session showed losses on the day for Allied Chemical of 6% points, for General Electric of 4%, for General Motors of 4% points, for Hudson of 4% points and for Steel of 23 points. From these lows.there were, of couse, partial recoveries as short sellers accepted profits. Light was thrown on profits in the steel trade by the Republic Iron & Steel statement for the third quarter. It showed profits for the common stock equivalent to 21 cents a share against $1.82 a share in the preceding quarter and $2.91 a share in the third quarter of 1926. ~ A few stocks stood out against the trend. Wabash and Erie did well. | Radio was down only fractionally, not- withstanding its swift advance yes- terday. United States Rubber was bought on reports that the du Ponts were interesting themselves -in the company. On the other hand Houston Oil was lower, and even such a high- grade stock as American Telephone & Telegraph dipped sharply. Selling well below 180, the return at the mar- ket was again over 5 per cent. SHIPMENTS OF PRODUCE OF NATION ARE AT PEAK CHICAGO, 1Il, October 19.—Fruit lana vegetable shipments are now at the peak for 1927, the Government Bu- reau of Agricultural Economics re- ported today. According: to official fig- ures, total shipments for the last week would make a solid train reaching from Chicago to St. Louis, approxi- mately 275 miles. The train would consist of about 36,- 000 cars and would contain at least | 18,000,000 bushels of produce, an aver- age of five quarts of fruits and vege- | tables for every person in the United ;smes | RAW SUGAR UNCHANGED. ;Futures Prices Little Easier—Re- ! fined Values Hold Steady. Fresh setbacks in wheat values here today took place despite relative strength of Liverpool quotations which weie at a full shipping parity and would normally spell the end of a de- cline. In the face of indications of an impanding heavy movement of Ca- nadian wheat. however, speculative buying support here wag.absent and about the only demand at times for future deliveries came from premious sellers who were in a position to col- lect a profit. In addition to favorable conditions for threshing in Canada and for en- larged movement of new wheat there, official reports were at hand saving that domestic Winter wheat seeding has been mostly completed west of the Mississippi River. NEW YORK, October 19 (#).—Di- rectors of Vanadium Corporation to- day declared an extra Christmas divi- dend of $1 a share, in addition to the regular quarterly disbursement of 75 cents.
