FIN FEATURE OF BONDS Industrials Quiet and Irreg- ular—Small Manufacturers’ Securities Are Weak. BY CHARI Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 27.—The Current preference for public utility stocks in the speculative market finds duplicate in the demand for publie utility bonds in the investmentt mar- ket. They were the features of to- day’s trading, both on the Stock Ex- , ¢hange and over the counter. ‘The two factors responsible for this are the increase in earning of power and light gompanies, in spite of the reaction in general business, and the higher average return available on these bonds in_competition with rail- road issues, Thé success shown by ANCIAL UNITED STATES. Selling Better. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Spectal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 27.—The price trend of the main body of Curb Murket stocks today was definitely downward. There were exceptions, but the manner in which recently prominent industrials were being liquidated indicated that speculative sentiment was not as optimistic about future price movements as it had been. The market late yesterday proved itselt vulnerable to selling operations, and those who had good sized profits accumulated on the recent upward movement were dis- posed to even up accounts. That more attention was given words of warning by prominent indi- viduals was evident by the further sharp decline in Royal Baking Pow- der shareg, following the statement by the president vesterday. Yesterday's decline of 36 points was extended 12 points today. The rise from the vear's low of 161 to 339 had been accompanied by rumors of an im- portant corporate change to provide for a merger with another prominent food products company. These re- ports were emphatically denied in the statement of President Zeigler, The stock changed hands at 247 today. *Celanese Corporation, old, which hadgbeen one of the prime favorites folloWing it recapitalization, was In supply below 10612, where it was off more than 2 points. Among the low- priced issues American Rayon Prod- ucts was heavily offered at a decline of 113 points. Newmont Mining drop- ped almost 2 points, and there was plenty of Goodyear Tire for sale when- ever bids came into the market. Ford Motor of Canada retracted part of the 25-point loss of yesterday fol- lowing _publication of earnings for 1926. These disclosed net profit equal to §76.30 a share on the 70,000 shares outstanding. Public utilities resisted the selling better than most other groups, but their action was not as thepiring from a bull standpoint as it had been at the ontset of the week. American Gas & Electric, Electric Bond and Share and American Super Power issues con- tinued in demand at higher prices, but their strength failed to be com- municated to other groups.
