Senator James A. Reed of Missouri, chairman, declared yesterday in com- menting on the recent notice to the Senate sergeant-at-arms to return the boxes or a demand for $6,400 for their replacement would be made. The ballot boxes, containing the ballots in the contested Vare-Wilson senatorial election, are impounded by the court in Washington. “The ballot boxes are there and are not going to be disturbed or their contents Interfered with,” Senator Reed said, ‘“unles the committee shall be able to make some arrange- ment to remove the ballots in such a manner as to absolutely preserve their integrity, that I am sure the commit- tee will endeavor to do when it meets s. of course, no disposition to pla v hardship on the election authorities of Pennsylvania. Two Schools Get Modern Equip- ment for New Year. Improved sanitation at the Stanton and Garfield Schools located on Ana- costia Heights, beginning with the opening of school on Monday, Septem- ber 19, was announced today at the Franklin School by Assistant Supt. of Schools Robert L. Haycock. Whereas in the past the pupils at these schools have been provided with out-of-door toilet facilities, in the future modern fixtures will be found in the school basements. At the earliest possible moment sewer con- nections will be made to the schools, but for the present septic tanks are to be used.
