SCHOOL GROUNDS ASSISTANT ASKED Municipal Architect Harris Urges Need for Beautify- ing Play Yards. Another plea for the appointment of an assistant with knowledge of horti- culture to aid in beautification of pub- lic school vards and pla contained in the annual report of Mu nicipal Architect Albert L. Harris, made public to hy Engineer Com- missioner William R. Ladue. A simi- lar request was made by Mr. Harris in his last annual report, but it went unheeded. Despite the lack of the proposed horticulturist assistant, Mr. Harris reported that some progress has been made in the development of school grounds. Health School Work Cited. “Small allotments have been al- lowed by the school board for grading purposes and surfacing . grounds,” he s ¥ @ only has any real attempt been made to adequately treat the surrounding property of a school building. That building was the Health School at Thirteenth street near Allison street, where on the south front a simple for- mal garden with stone walks and flower beds has been laid out and a sun dial placed in the middle. It is hoped that before next Summer flower beds and shrubbery may be installed 80 as more fully to develop the begin- ning made this year. “Studies have been made of the planting of the grounds of the more recent school buildings, and with more adequate appropriations these plans will be developed. It is the aim of this office to make the approaches and surroundings of the schools as at- tractive as possible “Advice as to the more suitable plants to use for the purpose also is needed, and it is hoped that in the near future provision may be made for an assistant in the office who can supply the advice.” Building Program Accomplished. The report pointed out that Mr. Harris supervised the letting of §: 400,674 contracts for the 12-month period ended last June 30, and an-| nounced the completion during the ear of the following buildings: Fran- s, Randall and Stuart Junior High Schools; Whittier, Barnard and Trues- | dale Elementary Schools; additions to the Macfarland and Hine Junior High Schools; the fourteenth police pre- cinct, and additions to the District Jail and the Fire Department repair shop. Other buildings under contract, | some nearing completion, were listed as follows: McKinley Technical High School, Langley Junior High School, ‘Woodridge and Bruce Schools, addi- tion to the Smothers, gymnasitm and assembly halls for the Petworth and | ‘West_Schools, the new birdhouse for the National Zoological Park and the grounds is 7 = 3 More Tragedy. l No more upon the village ways do we behold J. A candidate for the presidency will have to stand squarely for the princi- ples of the McNary-Haugen farm re- lief bill in order to obtain the indorse- ment of the Northwest, in the opinion of Senator Nye, Republican, of North Dakota, who returned to Washington yesterday. “Any man who opposed farm relief in the last session of Congress will never carry the Northwest in a na- tional election,” he added. ‘Neither Coolidge nor Hoover would be accept- able, but either Lowden or Norris would be.” Place the curiosity of a woman before the camera and the result will be a picture of some man.
