WALKER TRIP STIRS FIGHT OVER FLAGS Gotham Mayor’s Visit to Ber- lin Revives Objection to New Emblem. By the Associated Press. BERLIN, August 25.—Whatever else Mayor Walker's first visit to Bel lin may yield in the nature of a turesque contribution to the g of nations, it will likely be recor in German post-war political his as marking the beginning of a des- perate fight between the champions and opponents of the German repub lican colors. The burgomaster, Gustave Bo announced his intention to rer away from the function. Hotels in Campaign. Mr. Walker is enjoying the cl: specimen of a German political squa ble from the side lines. “I am not concerned with the num- ber or assortment of their flags; 1 want to see Berlin,” was the onl comment he had to offer. While the hotels are attempting to - divert attention from the flag quarrel by flying the Stars and Stripes in honor of the mayor's v r lined up solid for a battle to move the pow hotel men, who for yea carrying on an open boycott against the flag of the republic. They hurled defiance at the bureo master by drawing up a resolution no to holst the black, red and gold r Jican standard in the futur sizing that they do not propo: render to him and that they prefer t observe a neutral attitude in the quar rel over flags, which has been one the chronic ailments of the juv republic. Berliners Like Walker. A legal controversy is foreshadowed as the hotel men propose to sue for | an injunction against the burgomaster | on the ground. that their establish ments are being formally boycotted by the municipality of greater Berlin, to which, they say, they are paying lib- eral sums in taxes. They will base their action on the official decree which forbids municipal officials from parte- ipating n formal functions at such ho- tels as flagrantly flout the national colors. Mayor Walker's well known aversi to red tape and convention is proving a delight to Berliners and his free and easy manner has won their hearts.
