S. Securities Hold Steady. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 20.—Weck end profictaking was in evidence in vari- ous sections of the bond market today. However, continued easy mony and the want of competition from new of- ferings, of which there was an ag- gregate of less than $50,00,000 this week, lent prices a firm undertone, and several of the high-grade invest- ment mortgages were again climbing gradually, Realizing was most pronounced in the French and Italian groups. French government 8s, Lyons 68, and Italian 7 were all fractionally lower. Domes- tic convertible liens also inclined to | heaviness, including the D' 4s of the Erie and Brooklyn Union Gas 5lgs. There were few advances of more than a smal fraction. Buffalo, Roches- ter & Pittsburgh 4348 moved up a half, and smaller gains were recorded by Baltimore & Ohio (Southwestern) s, Pennsylvania and Bethlehem teel 528 United Stat tions received s prices were steady COTTON MARKETS. NEW YORK, August 20 (®). Government’s report on the activities of boll weevil and other insects in the cotton belt was followed by active and excited buying in the cotton market today, Prices made new high records for the season on all deliveries, December selling up to 21.20 or points net higher, and closing at 21.12. The gen- eral market closed steady at net ad vances of 62 to 75 points. The market opened firm at an advance of 27 to 38 points, all ac- tive months, except May and July, making new high record prices for the season. December sold up to 20.80 and March to 20.90 on buying which was active and general and appeared to be stimulated by continued unfavor- able crop reports, combined with ex- pectations of a bullish Government re- port today on boll weevil and other insect activities. The higher prices met a good deal of realizing for over the week end, which caused reactions of 10 or 12 points from the best during the first hour, but the setback seemed to bring in enough additional buying to give the market a steady undertone. Private cables said that an early ad- vance in Liverpool on covering and buying on reports of crop deteriora tion had been checked by realizing and hedge selling.
