NEW FLOOD THREAT ™ STIRS ARKANSAS White and Black Rivers Are Reported Rising Near Headwaters. By the Associated Press. LITTLE ROCK, Ark., August 15. ‘With the Arkansas River receding from Fort Smith south, a new flood threat was developed g the White and Black Rivers today, as both streams were reported rising rapidly near their headwaters, as a result of heavy rains through southern Missouri and north Kansas yesterday:. ‘The rise along the W and the Black, which empties into the former stream, will not affect the upper Arkansas, but will add to its volume near the Mi ippl. A fall of .9 of a foot was registered here yesterday and H. S. Cole, Government meteor- ologist here, said the river would con- tinue to recede for several days. Heavy rains in Kansas late last week have caused the Arkansas to rise in its| upper reaches, but before the new rise | reaches here, the river will have re- ceded greatly. Fear that repairs made at the Pen- dleton and Medford crevasses had suf- fered heavily from the present rise were expressed by H. R. Rice of the levee division of the Arkansas Flood Commission. More than 100,000 acres in Chicot and Desha Counties have been inun- dated, but less than 200 families have been affected. All are being cared for by the Red Cross. W. P. ATRICK MURPHY walked di- rectly to the table and lald his packages upon it. He explain- ed that he had stopped at a little store at the corner to “get things for me granddarter.” “But suppose it isn't that kind of a baby suggested Father Whalen, as his old friend laid aside his coat. “Phwat—ye mean it's a boy, and he'll have to have the name of Levy tacked on him forever?” cried Patrick Murphy. “I said, suppose!” chuckled Father Whalen. “And anyway, Levy isn't such a terrible name. If it's good enough for Rose-Mary, it should be good enough for her children.” “That's the trouble!” argued Pat- rick Murphy. “It isn’t good enough for Rose-Mary! Why, she's descended from the kings of Ircland.” “And for all you know, Abie her husband may be descended from the salem!” continued Father o, just plain Jew,” came a qulet voice behind them. It was Abie, who had entered with- out either of them seeing him. “But I love Rose-Mary, Mr. Mur- phy, and I wouldn't do a thing to hurt her. Can you say as much?” Patriek Murphy shrugged his shoul- ders and turned away. “The lad is right, Patrick,” said Father Whalen. And, crossing to Abje, he asked him in an undertone to keep the others in the Kitchen for a moment. Abie nodded at once and went out again. But he had barely gone when the door-bell rang a second time. Father Whalen went to answer it. It was Dr. Samuels this time. The two clersymen shook hands while Patrick Murphy grunted. “Huh! The Jewlsh parson.” Dr. Samuels disregarded this breach of good manners and said pleasantly: “So you came all the way from Cal- ifornia to spend Christmas with Rose- T did not!” shouted Patrick Mur- “I came to see me granddar- He turned to Father Whalen. “I couldn’t carry everything upstairs at once. His bark is worse than his bite,” said the priest. ‘“‘As a matter of fact, he is dying to see his daughter as well as the granddaughter he takes for granted.” Both laughed at the ‘‘granddaugh- ter.” ‘And Solomon {s just as anxious to see his son and the grandson he takes for granted,” sald Dr. Samuels. “The young folks have certainly stuck it out,” reflected Father Whalen. ey should be forgiven. “In my opinion it's the young folks who have the real forgiving to do,” said Dr. Samuels, soberly. Have you been in the bedroom asked Dr. Samuels. T have not,” said Father Whalen. “Let’s go in and have a look.” So the two men crossed to the bed- room door and opened it. All was quiet within, and, moving carefully on tip- toe, they stepped inside. As the door closed after them the hall door opened, and instead of the burly figure of Patrick Murphy there appeared another and very different e—Solomon Levy. Solomon put his head in cautiously and looked about. Then, as no one appeared to have heard him, he step- ped in. Across his shoulder was slung a bag, and he looked for all the world like Santa Claus, except that he lacked old Santa’s beard and he wore ear muffs. Assured that there was no one in the living room, he took off his coat and hat and ear muffs and opened his pack. His presents proved to be a Teddy bear, a horse and engine, drum and sticks. He began to arrange these things about the foot of the Christmas tree, and he was so absorbed in what he was doing that he failed to notice the equally stealthy return of Patrick Murphy, now carrying a toy phono- graph. Neither man saw the other for an instant. Patrick Murphy set the pho- nograph down beside the Christmas tree, on the opposite side of which Solomon Levy was busy placing the tail on the toy horse. Then he turned to the table where. he had placed the other toys. Solomon put wheeled and stand turned into the p down the drum. The Irishman wheeled and straightened. The two spied each other. And across their faces flashed an instant and long cherished hatred. In a stillness broken only by the light-hearted laughter from the kitch- en, they moved slowly toward !ugl —_— Pl POSAI,S. At the sound both men_ halted as it at the touch of a hand. A look of guilt, confusion and ombarrassment struggled with the red rage burning in them—struggled and triumphed. Slowly, but surely, an amusing transformation took place in each of them. Separated by only & pace or two, they shrugged and colored, like two small boys caught in some form of mischief, and nmlly, sniffling tbe con- tempt which was the only emotion either felt free to express, they turned their backs on each other. Then began a comical scene between Neither saw the other for an instant. the two. Solomon Levy took up the Teddy bear and placed it directly in front of the Christmas tree. Patrick Murphy unwrapped a doll elaborate enough to outshine the bear. Solomon at once brought forward the toy horse and sat the Teddy bear astride it. Patrick Murphy then unwrapped a go-cart, placed the doll inside it and stood it beside the horse and Teddy bear. Solomon was about to start up his engine, while Patrick turned on the phonograph, with a lively Irish jig on it, when Rabbli Bamuels and Father Whalen reappeared. ‘The two fathers never noticed them. They had taken chairs at opposite sides of the tree, and now Patricl notieing a package with Rose-Mary' uame written on it, cried challengingly: “Murphy! Murphy is a grand old name! Solomon spoke up instantly: “When you hear Solomon Levy, you don’t have to use your jmagination—it speaks for itself!” Both clergymen undertook at once to placate their charges, Father Wha. len endeavoring to quiet Patrick, who insisted that he was trying to “see if everything worked for his grand- darter,” while the rabbi argued with Solomon, who was equally insist. ent about wanting “to arrange things for his grandson. “Come, come mnow!” pleaded the rabbl. “If you two are going to fight like this you should have stayed away!” At that Patrick Murphy burst out: “Phwat—me stay away from me granddarter on Christmas! “And me avay from mine grandson on—er, diss day?” chorused Solomon Levy. There was more argument—a heated discussion between the four. But finally Father Whalen’s voice arose above the rest. “Look here, Patrick, old friend— vou'll admit one thing, I know. You'll alar!,d( the Irish are a wonderful peo- ple?” “Don't T know {t!"” cried Patrick, throwing out his chest. Solomon grunted scornfully, “Huh!" “And Solomon here will admit that the Jews are a wonderful people?” continued Father Whalen, shrewdly. It was Patrick Murphy’s turn te scoff then:; but the priest continued: “Very well, why not get together, then? If the Jews and the Irish could get Ito ether, they could conquer the worl Rabbi Samuels nodded quickly. “You're right there, Father,” he sald. “And I think they should get together right now." Patrick Murphy doubled up his fists. “Sure and that suits me, golly!™ he said. “That suits me perfectly!” And he bristled once more, started toward Solomon Levy, who quickly and wisely retreated. But Father Whalen paid no atten- tion. He continued his argument, in- sisting that Abie was one of the finest lads he had ever met, while Dr. S8am- uels paid an equally enthusiastic trib- ute to Rose-Mary—only he made the mistake of calling her “Rosie,” which brought an expression of dissatisfac- tion from Patrick Murphy. The discussion flared up again, run- ning the gamut of religlous antago- nism and racial hatred. But eventually Patrick Murphy an- nounced: “If you'll let me see my grand, darter I'll go home.” “Well—I Vant to see Able's first. born, too,” said Solomon Levy. Dr. Samuels nodded eagerly. “I'll bring the baby in,” he sald, and stepped into the bedroom. During the brief moment while he was gone Patrick Murphy announced that if it were a girl it woyld inherit 11 _his money, while Solomon Levy announced that if it were a boy it would get all his. The rabbl returned with a little bundle, but it was to Father Whalen that he addressed himself. ““Would you mind taking Httle Pat- rick Joseph for me a minute?” At the sound of that name Patrick Murphy became immediately enthusi- tic.
