MARKET TRAD SHOWS STRENGTH Judge Gary’s Death Causes Fluctuation in Steel, But Stocks Soon Rally. BY GEORGE T. HUGH | Dispatch to The Star. | | EW YORK, August The ef-| | fect of the announcement of Judge | | Blbert H. Gary’s death at the be {ning of the stock mar adi day was a rather se { movement for a time in the sh of the United States Steel Corpora- | tion. This selling, however. failed to unsettle the market as a whole and toward the end of the first hour U. § | Steel common got back to Saturd { final | Du Pont, another issue which w: | likely to feel the effect of this de: velopment more than most others, | | was practically unchanged after the announcement Judge Gary's s made. Other industrials and the rails moved in o- | n | firm unison. Higher were the rule for and rails at the start of the week on the Stock Ixchange. Margin calls sent out after the close Saturday were unexpectedly limited and selling of a forced character was not in_evidenc Southern Railway and Delaware Hudson featured the high-grade rails ances of 113 points at the New York, Ontario and Maryland and other lower priced issues were generally higher. | Hudson and Nash firmed | i moving sym- prices acterized Ly every ap fidence. The trend was distinetly up- ward. Business was not on so large a scale as last week, but it was more vidently the technical con- dition has been greatly improved. It was noticeable also that the stocks called *“pool stocks” were no longer the leaders and that was reassuring to the conservative element. Aside from the death of Judge Gary there was no news to affect prices. Money renewed at 3% per cent, un- to the prevalent optimistic view to the market's condition. The rails were more prominent | than in any recent session. Shares of the Northwestern roads were eas- ily the features. Northern Paci: and Great Northern preferred were | strong from the start and afterward Chicago & Northwestern and then Paul were taken up. As it stands today the Northwestern rails combine greater investment and speculative at- traction than the stocks of other car- viers. Great Northern seems to be in the best position of the group with estimated 1927 earnings over twice the present $5 dividends. The stock sold today around par and practically at the high of the year. Stocks continued firm throughout the afterncon. General Motors and United States Steel added to their early gains and other stocks came to the front, among them Montgomery & Ward at_practically the high of the year. Reading was prominent among the dividend-paying rails, up two points, and others to sell higher included Atchison and Atlantic Coast Line.
