IS8 ROSE LEE lay curled up under a Navajo blanket in a room- warm as Sum- mer and as fragrant, for it was scented with Chinese lilies. The lilles were in a little green | pot near the old-fashioned sofa and Rose smelled them as she lay there idly with her hands clasped over her bead. Very slight and thin and pale, a most unroselike person was she, who inhabited either Mrs. Brill's sofa or Mrs. Brill's big basket chair during the entire time she was out of bed. For Rose Lee had been very ill and the doctor who had sent her to Mrs. Brill's keeping. had insisted that she make effort slowly. Tt was very fortunate for Rose that she had Mrs. Brill, and so she thought now as her wan, broken eyes took in the charm of the lilies. Somewhere back in the past, far back. Rose’s life had touched Hester Brill and, rough they had not seen each other v years at a time, the written word had kept communication between them. Now in her stress Rose thought of the one safe, sure haven where she could receive the things she had longed for so long—sympathy and love and care. She had asked Hester it she might come to her for rest and Hester had told her to hurry up and not wait a moment. Iere she was in her second week of the peace and comfort and delight of the old square house where Hester Brill, widowed and childless, reigned alone. And she was getting well, she who had felt that life was a thread which as wearing terribly thin and. what was more, she wanted to get tetter, jut there was one thing she didn’t nt and she expressed it now to iester Brill, who entered with a cup »¢ malted milk in her hand. I don't want to go away from this « ever.” she sald. ‘Hester, large and calm, <urprise. “Oh, yes you will, as soon as you ‘cel stronger. You'll go back and get nto the harness and fight and claw it the world just as you always have lone. Why, in five weeks more your stuff will be in all the papers and our picture, too—but nobody will scognize {t.” “I should say not.” Rose sipped her milk and smiled. “Once they had my name under a popular dancer’s picture and another time they had my picture over the name of a popular murderess, not but what she was better looking than I am.! Hester looked shocked. “You'll zo back,” she said. “You'll have to. They'll spy vou out and de- mand you. I'm certain that young man who came to the door this morn- ing was a reporter. Will Fenton thought so, too. By the wav, he’s coming across the street now with something for you. I can't see what it is.” Rose turned her head and studied the approaching visitor. Mr. Fenton lived in the kindly, old-fashioned house opposite alone. His housekeeper had ot married a few weeks before and he had not replaced her. He took his meals out and managed alone be- cause he had no woman relative near enough to companion him. Very tall and thin and grave was Mr. Fenton, with the nicest face in the world and quite the pleasantest voice. He entered as one who was sure of welcome and placed a tiny purring <olden bundle of fur upon the sofa heside Rose, “A Kitte she cried, and buried her face in its dainty warmth. Now, Will Fenton, what did you do that for?” Hester demanded, eve- inz Rose and the kitten and the giver with amusement. showed PROPOSALS. Hester sald nothing. She only con- tinued to smile at Rose and the kitten. “It's the funnlest thing,” she burat out when Mr. Fenton had gone. “You. to be loving a Kkitten Rose suddenly burst into tears. “Hester,” she said, “I never thought there was anything in me but what 1 have shown the public, but there is— there is. I'm just a woman after all. I want love—a home——." She paused, biting her lips on what was a half sob, half smile. “I am a fool ended. Hester knit cautiously. “Will Fenton doesn’t know who you are,” she said. “Certainly he doesn't ]0\'9 vou for that ., he doesn't know whko I am but when be finds out—." Rose looked wearily away. “I suppose I ought to tell him—I wish you would. Hester continued to knit. That afternoon as Rose Lee lay cuddling the kitten and pondering gravely, the door opened upon her. Hester, she thought., had returned oversoon from a shopping expedition over town. She turned her head and saw a thin, eager-faced young woman staring at her. “Oh!"” said this young woman. “I've found you at last.” She advanced upon Rose, extending a card. But Rose didn't need to look at the card to know that the young woman repre sented the Daily Eagle or something of the sort. “How did you get in?” she gasped “Through the unlocked cellar door,” answered the reporter triumphantly. Fortunately Hester entered just then and put a stop to it. “It is all over,” groaned Rose. *1 must go. I suppose I have been able to go this long time. Now that my incognito is at an end I must go. Next thing th e representative of your Weekly Tattler will be upon me.” “He already has been,” snapped Hester. Rose left on the evening train. She went without saying good-by to Will Fenton. What was the use? He couldn’t care for her any more when he knew, and anyway her work called her. She went back to the city, to the apartment which she shared with three other women, to the name of Sarah_Bolton, which sounds better than Rose Lee, when one is a writer on a variety of subjects and com- mands a large public, and to a new sense of the futility in some cases of a career. “So you're back.” sald Jane Dyer, who wrote realistic poetry. ‘““Hello, Bolton!” cried Zora Steel, who did queer illustration for the magazines, “Looking better, uh?” commented Lucretia Palsley, who did socia) service work. A queer quartet, Sarah thought. She missed Hester—and home—and— and a lot of those things. A month passed and she couldn’t get into the harness, she couldn't write, it made her_head ache to look up data, Zora's Russlan cigareftes sickened her; Jane Dyer's batik blovses got on her nerves, Lucretia’s care- less ways jarred her. She didn’t want caviar and black coffee and the smell of chypre—she wanted the scent of Chinese lilies and homemade bread and a Kkitten which must be growing up too fast, and Hester and— So she gave it all up and went back. and her three mates didn't regret, for they sald she had lost her cachet; it was a terrible thing to lose one's cachet. Hester welcomed her. So you're Rose Lee again,” she sald. “Yes." Rose took up the kitten and cuddled him. “I'm going to stay Rose Lee for the rest of my day: “Oh, no, you won't,” Hester said. “You don’t think I'll go back!’ cried Rose aghast at the po!llhfllly Hester chuckled, “No. You'll hecome Mrs. Will Fen- ton in about three months,” she sald The End. fCovyright 1927.)
