10 “%° BONDS HAVE RALLY AFTER EARLY DROP General List Continues Rise in Face of Coolidge’s Announcement. cial Dispatch to The St NEW YORK, August 3 a limited number of sj sues, the hond market w tected today by the break in stocks. | Bonds that follow money ntes and the technical market conditions con- tinued to advance and the general average showed a gain of about half point compared with a week ago. One of the conspicuous features of the bond trading recently has heen the manner in which a number of | second and third grade issues have been influenced by the strength of stocks. Today many of these bonds experienced a weak period during the morning, when the liquidation was most severe. Later they rallied near- W to the level of vesterday's closing and in_the afternoon several were distinetly strong. Erie Bonds Off. convertible “D"” 4's were off | two points, Brooklyn Union | over two, J. Keyser 51z's about point, Chies n Ilinois refunding 5's quarter and the St. Paul 4% and §'s quite large | fractions | The effect of this was to restrict dealings for a while in the speculative | department of the market, though it did not lead to any important pri concessions. As matter of fac there was more interest in tomorro action of the Federal Reserve dis- count rate than in the Coolidge state- ment. Moderate strength was displayed by { several hij ade issues, like those of | Northern Great Northern, Southern (Pacific, New York Central, Tlinois Central and Union_Pacific companies, Te: Pacifiec, Missouri Pacific. Terminal 5%s advanced a full point. Inasmuch as the newer 412 per cent bonds return a greater in- come at the present level than the ©ld 4 per cent issues. there was a dis- tinct preference for them. Government Issues Quiet. United States Government honds were quiet with a steady tone for the Jong maturities. g The feature of the foreign groups was the rise in French City 6s to par. This established them at a level to- ward which they have been moving steadily for over a vear. Seine Ts are up a point since last week. French government 8s duplicated their previ- ous high above 111. All of the Japanese government and municipals were s::“z?g‘ City of Rome and City ‘:;‘e) more ac\ii\'e and ll‘flghe!‘ than they have been in some time. Liquidation in Brooklyn Manhattan Transit 6s was a feature of the trac- tion group. WHEAT HOLDS STEADY IN TODAY’S DEALINGS ‘Coolidge’s Stand on Third Term Has No Apparent Effect on Grain Prices. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, I, August 3.—In the face of price breaks in stocks and cot- ton, grain markets displayed unusual steadiness early today. ~President Coolidge’s announcement had no ap- parent effect on cereals or provisions, 201 the pits presenting a humdrum ap- pearance, with price changes only fractional. Opening unchanged to 5% off, wheat later showed a slight rally. Corn was firm, starting half cent off to one-quarter up and later showing a small general advance. Oats sagged o little. Provisions were easy. Grain traders eagerly discussed po- litical aspects of President Coolidge’s announcement, but were about unani- mous in expressing the view that in this case his action or that of the stock market should have no special influence on grain prices. Meanwhile uncertainties regarding black rust and frost in Spring crop territory operated as a strengthening factor inthe wheat market. Cool weather over the corn belt gave an upward trend to the corn prices. Comprehensive advices at hand indi- cated that late planted corn is not progressing as it should to make an average yield before the usual date of frost. —— . PROFIT DECREASES. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispateh to The Star. NEW YORK, August 3.—The formal announcement of President Coolidge that he did not choose to run for | President in 1928 threw a bombshell into the Curb Market today. The cam- paign for higher prices, which had been in progress for several months, had placed the market in a highly vul- ble position. Overnight selling or- crs came into the market in enough volume, with the result that the first hour's trading was the most exciting in_ many months. Prices broke from 1 to more than 3 points in the industrial favorites, and in one or two isolated instances as much as 7 points, before there was any s | semblance of support. But what was even more significant than the opening break was the man ner in which the market rallied after the initial outburst of selling had run its course. The sharp reaction was what the short interest had been hop ing for, and it hurried to take advan ge of it. The result was an abrupt reversal of the general trend, and it was a question whether any great amount of actual profit had been con short side. roceries opened un 4015 and subsequently The initial loss in Metr mounted to 4 hoa good part of it i Singer Manuf at one time was selling 7 points helow vesterday's final. The decline in St. Regis Paper extended to 2 points. Johns Manville, after rding a loss of almost 3 points, regained more than half the decline. Kord Motors of Canada dropped 4 points. Good ear, after losing more than 2 points, ecovered practically all of the decline, United Gas and Improvement dropped 5 points, only to make up the loss ater. Stocks which had done little in the recent campaign for higher prices were not so much affected, This was particularly true of the oil shares. A number of the better grade oils were actually in better demand than they had been. Standard Oil of Indiana gained more than 2 points and Humble Oil almost a point. Prairie Pipe, after losing a point, recovered more than the decline. Vacuum Oil was an ex- ception and shared in the weakness. . COTTON HAS BREAK ON POLITICAL NEWS Coolidge Choice Unsettles Market—Prices Steady After Early Drop. changed reached By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 3.—A sharp break occurred in the cotton market here at the opening today. An unex- pectedly severe decline in Liverpool, which some traders attributed, in part. to the unsettling influence of President Coolidge’s announcement on senti- ment, was followed by a break.of 46 to 52 points at the start of trading here, with December selling off to 17.57 under heavy general liquidation. This represented a decline of approx- imately 172 points from the recent high level, and, after the first rush of selling subsided, prices steadied on covering and trade buying. By the end of the first hour December was selling at 17.77, or about 20 points up from the lowest, with ‘the general list showing net declines of 30 to 34 points. = Private cables reported heavy liqui- dation and hedge selling in Liverpool. The volume of business tapered off after the heavy initial selling orders were absorbed and the market rallied 20 or 25 points from the lowest on trade buying and covering. The tone, however, remained more or less un- settled, and the bulges brought out a renewal of liquidation, or selling, which became more active after the publication of the weekly report of the Weather Bureau. At midday De- cember was selling around 17.63, or within 7 points of the early low level, and the general list showed net de- clines of about 42 to 46 points. New Orleans Market. NEW ORLEANS, August 3 (#).— The cotton market here today got away to an unsteady opening due to Liverpool coming in lower than due and better weather conditions in *he helt. ~ First trades showed a loss of 37 to 40 points. Prices continued b low yesterday's close. Trade buying later, however, came into the market cturing | Sales in hundreds. Alb el Alb Pick Ba lam Co n....
