13 AINEE AND MOTHER "END MONEY BREAK Evangelist Takes Control of Temple After 10 Days’ Wrangle. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, August 2.—. Bemple McPherson took full con her Angelus Temple today as the re sult of an agreement announcs night in which Mrs relinquished the agement of the church and the two women publicly kissed and made up to | end their differences. | The settlement, announced by attor- neys for both after a two-hour confer- ence, apparently ended a 10-day row between mother and daughter in which the latter had been backed by a group of temple members who rebelled against Mrs. Kennedy's control of finances. During its bitter course Mr Kenned# had said she was resigning immediately, while her daughter an- nounced in an ultimatum that Mrs. Kennedy was ousted. The latter charged that her daughter d to speak to her again except through her lawyers, and then Mrs. Kennedy de- clared she would withdraw only upon & 50-50 division of hold d at approximately $100,000, which was not | & part of the temple property. Almee in Control. ol of Kennedy | ness man. | | The management announcement | merely sald that “Mrs. Minnie Ken- nedy will give up active at Angelus Temple and M son will assume complete control. he women would dis- of the settlement, but | it was learned that it v ly hi a | upon the 5 0 plan insisted upon by Mrs. Kenned ttorneys said the | full details of the settlem: would be | worked out within the next few days. Easter Hill, where the evangelist holds er services, was said by the attorneys to be the only real estate held personally by Mrs.McPhar- son and her mother. It valued at_$70,000. The temple property, consisting of | the real estate and buildings, is held | by the Echo Park Evangelical Association, of which mother and | daughter are two of the three trustees Mrs. Kennedy had contended that there was no other trustee, since| the orlginal one named is dead. The | exangelist claimed that her secretary, Miss Emma Schaeffer, was the other trustee. k The temple property is estimated to be worth considerably over half & million dollars. The announcement did not indicate || that Mrs. Kennedy was withdrawing from trusteeship of the temple own- ing association. Ends Year of Disputes. The agreement brings to a close one more chapter in the life of the evangelist, which for more than a year has been checkered with alle- gations, denials, investigations and disputes all connected directly or in- directly with her disappearance at the || beach during the Summer of 1926 and || her reappearance more than a month Jater in Arizona with a story that she had been kidnaped and held prisoner in Mexico. The recent controversy between Mrs. McPherson and her mother brought a flareback on the kidnaping story when Mrs. Kennedy denied published statements attributed to her that she doubted her daughter’s story. . HURRICANE HITS TOWN. Great Damage Caused by Disturb- ance on Islands. LAS PALMAS, ‘August 2 (#).—Much damage has been done to the town of Tirajana by a hurricane that swept over the region yesterday. Roofs were torn away, Toots uprooted and vehicles overturne: by the force of the gale. In some places plantations were destroyed and almond, olive and corn crops suffered severely. Fearing the collapse of their homes, || the inhab.tants of the reglon took refuge in & church. | Loulsiana E(SLL WEEVIL INCREASE REPORTED FROM SOUTH Many Points in Cotton Belt Hold Pest Is Gaining Headway. By the Associated Presa. Increasing boll weevil infestation in most of the cotton belt was indicated in the Department of Agriculture's report yesterday, covering the period to July 15. College Station, Tex., reported that at 60 points 16 per cent of the squares were punctured. Baton Rouge, La., reported what in central and southern infestation was decidedly 'NO INTEREST OR EXTRAS ADDED TO CHARGE ACCOUNTS ‘THE EVENING spotted. Tallulah, La., reported infes- tation averaged 19.5 per cent. The Mississippi A. & M. College reported boll weevils nearly four times as nu- merous as at this time last year. In that State, 95 farms in 22 countles reported an average infestation of 17.2 per cent and infestation increasing gradually. Florence, S. C., reported an average of 155 per cent infesta- tion. The weevil was reported quite active in the southern countles of North Carolina, but not so severe in the lower Piedmont counties. Real “Golf Club.” MOUNTAIN IRON, Minn. STAR, WASHINGTON, PROPOSE FREE LUNCHES AS SOURCE OF REVENUE Britain’s Income Authorities Sug- gest Tax on Firms Supplying Gratuity to Employes. By the Associatea Press. LONDON, August 2.—Free lunches are suggested by the income tax au- thorities as a possible source of rev- enue, A number of companies in England provide free lunches for their em- ployes, and the revenue department considers such lunches a form of in come and wants to tax them. “The total sum which might be ob- tained,” sald one revenue officer, D. C. “would be a very considerable addi- tion to the revenue. Suppose an em- ploye has 10 shillings’ worth of food a week from his employers; that is £26 a year, on which £12 12s might be charged.” All very good arithmetic, sald A. S. Andeman, member of the House of Commons for Lancashire, rising in de- fense of the free lunch eatess, “but it strikes me as the most rifculous of the many ridiculous things Somerset House (the revenue office) has done.” g z Ex-Railroad Official Dies. TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1927. CHICAGO MAYOR DROPS PLANS FOR WORLD FAIR Member of Administration Says Demonstration Is Regarded as Provincial in Modern Age. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, August 2.—The Tribune says today that the administration of Mayor Thompson has decided to abn- don plan. for a world's fair and cen- tennial exposition in 1933 A member of the mayor’s advisory co .mittee is quoted as saying that a world's fair is provincial in this mod- ern age and that it would prove un- successful. The march of progress has made other things more important, such as subways, lake-front projects and other proposed civic improvements. The Tribune says that instead of the world’s fair the city would observe 1933 as a gala year, marking the com- pletion of all’projected enterprises. ‘The fair, marking the centennial an- niversary of Chicago's organization as a village, was proposed by the admin- istration of former Mayor Dever.
