. fIOWN T0 BE MOVED OUT OF FLOOD AREA Columbus, Ky., Said to Have| || . Been Proposed as Site of National Capital. Already partly destroyed by the Mississippi flood, the historic town of Columbus, Ky., said to have been proposed once as a site for the Na- tional Capital, is going to be en- || tirely dismantled and removed to a || high bluft half a mile back from the || river. Decision to move the town was an- nounced here yesterday by the Amer- ican Red Cross, after several weeks || of investigation, The operation will cost thousands of dolars, but is deemed necessary to save the town from being wholly swept into the || river. A strip of the town more than 200 feet wide has been caten away by the swift current within the past few months and the remainder is in im- minent danger of destruction. Army engineers at first estimated it would || cost thousands of dollars, but is || moving project, but with sion of ||| the plans to include removal only |} of residential structures the proposi- || tion became feasible economically. Report Showed Condition. Secretary Hoover and Vice Chalr- [{ man Fieser of the Red Cross became interested in the plizht of the little Kentucky community upon receipt in St. Louis, several weeks ago, of a ||} report from Marion Rust, Red Cross || representative in Columbus, showing the extent of damage there from the flood. i Rust told the Secretary that in- habitants of Columbus claim theiv town occupied a site selected by ||l Thomas Jefferson as a new seat of || government. Secretary Hoover ex- pressed surprise at this statement, and careful search of available rec- ords since has failed to reveal any verification of the claim. Rust explained that the story was || to the effect that a group of Ken- (| tuckians argued that the Capital should be moved westward, asserting that the country was pushing in that direction and that later the center of * national activity would be along the Mississippi River. Jefferson laid the city out and a town was built on the site. Then came the problem of a |l name, and finally it was decided to honor the memory of America’s dis- coverer. Center of Civil War Activity. During the Civil War Columbus || was regarded as the upper key to the || Mississippl River fortifications of the Confederate Army, and it was at this point, Mr. Rust pointed out, that the Southern general, Pillow, attempted to string a great steel chain across the Mississippi 2s a barrier to Union | gunboats. In the rocky side of the ! bluff, at the rear of the town, is a large anchor, used in this futile coup. The chain is said to have broken of its own tweight. The town was occu- || pled by the Union troops early in the (| war, and Gen. Grant is said to have made his headquarters there for u || short time. The population before the recent flood was scarcely more than 1,000 persons, many of whom have since been forced to seek aid from the Red Cross. 1If the original plans are car- ried out, the houses will be split into |! sections and carted up the hill to the || new site on the biuff. Red Cross offi- cials have gone to Columbus to make arrangements for the wholesale mov- ing undertaking. 24 EDITORS éO TO EUROPE || Journalists Guests of Carnegie En-; dowment for Peace.
