As will be recalled, the French troops were demoralized and this division, which was rushed it at Chateau Thierry, was all that stood between the Germans and the French capital. The Gth United States Engineers, which formed part of the division, were organized in the vicinity of Washington and trained at the Ameri- n University, Washington Barracks and Belvoir, Va. This regiment ac- quired fame by being a part of Gen. Carey's forces in_the German drive of March, 1918. Due to the remark- able bravery exhibited in this with- drawing action, the regimental com- mander of the 6th United States En- gineers, Col. J. N. Hodges, was deco- rated with the British distinguished service order and was promoted to the grade of brigadier general. He was the youngest brigadier general during the war.
