MADONNA CROWNED ‘ IN FULFILLING OATH Former King's Decree in Gratitude for Victory in War Is Obeyed | in Poland. By the Associated Press. VILNA, July 4 (®).—Republican Poland, on the initiative of Premier Pilsudski, yesterday fulfilled an oath | taken by King John Casimir in 1656, who, when nearly all Poland was held by Swedish invaders, started war to free the country by offering all the Lady. After vic- | tory and in token of his gratitude, the King decided to crown the Ma- donna’s picture with the Polish crown. King Augustus 1T fulfilled this ob- ligation in 1717 by crowning_the miraculous picture of Madonna Czen- stochowa, while today the second part of the oath was accomplished by crowning the Madonna of Vilna, or “Ostrabrama,” which is walled in the gate in the remains of the old fortification. ‘With the Poles the Ma- donna at Ostrabrama is second only to_that at Czenstochowa. Despite a steady rain, the ceremony was carried out with great pomp and was attended by President Moscioki, Premier Pilsudski, nearly all the members of the cabinet, 2 cardinals, 20 bishops and several diplomats. Among the last group was John B. | Stetson, jr.. Minister from the United States. There were present more than 100,000 pilgrims, among them 1,200 Latvians.
