NEW YORK, June 10.—The stock market started in_higher today, but efore busine 1d been going on an hour an irregular downward reaction developed. The selling affected the railroad stocks more uniformly than it did the industrials, but there were many weak spots in the latter part of the list. There was no reason in the money ation for a decline in sfocks. The < rate had been left unck fter the close Thursday, but outside of a few speculators no one had ex- pected it would be cut at this time, Money renewed at 43 per cent, com- pared with the rate of 4 per cent for new loans prevailing on the day be- fore, but against showing in the Fede week- | 1y statement, with its increase in gold | holdings and rise in the reserve ratio. | There is still nance ] i | of fact, | cut in the bank rate would not the situation. The Cautious Attitude. What did seem to matter was the cautious attitude ins ¢ the ap- | proaching holiday. It was hard to any unexpected good news culated to put the mar- ket up, while unfavorable develop- ment might easily put it down. That seemed to be the thought in the mind aternity today. influence timore & Ohio stock financing plan, Baltimore & Ohio sold off sharply and most of the other active railroad ares weakened. The fact that Bal- Ohio shareholders receive overshadowed by in the total stock outstanding after the new shares have been distributed. That Baltimore & Ohlo is able to finance by common valuable rights wa | stock instead of bonds is really a con- structive event, but the market did not take it that way to the industrial groups, General set a new high for the pres- res directly at the start. Else- where there was great irregularity. There were a number of “air holes Texas Pacific Land Trust new broke sharply. Around 30 it was off 10 points from its recent high. There was a loss of 2 points between sales in Collins and Aikman. TU. S. Rubber Again Sinks. U. S. Rubber had another sinking spell. The sugars were weak, includ- ing, this time, South Porto Rico. Com- mercial Solvents “B,” at 340, was off | 20 points from the preceding close, but it regained part of the losg substan- tially. There were numerous issues to move against the trend. As a rule, the motors held well, the favorites being Hudson and Mack Trucks. American Can was strong. U. S. Steel fluctuat- ed uncertainly all the morning, but after the unfilled tonnage had been announced at noon the stock hard- ened. There was no logic in this inasmuch as orders now stand at the lowest in many years. Moody’s Weekly Review of Finan- cial Conditions in its current issue says in part: “Expansion of bullish sentiment is now accompanied by a gradual weak- ening of the position of the market. Brokers' loans are increasing rapidly, call money rates rising, and the in- flow of funds from the interior may begin to diminish any time. “Meanwhile the yields of stocks on their current prices have fallen too low as compared with bond yields. The ordinary common sense rule is that the higher the risk the higher the yield; but at present common stocks involving fairly high risks actually yield less than certain groups of com- peting bonds involving much lower risks. Such a condition in the past has always been a symptom of over- confldence. “Bond prices themselves are in a less strong position than they were as regards the near future, even though the general trend promises to remain upward in a long-range view. New bond issues have come out in nd this, together with e seasonal advance in money rates, may either check the rise in bond prices or else cause a :eml)orflr) bull market reaction there- n Exchange to Be Closed. Trading was heavy on the Wash- ington Stock Exchange today, the last day of business until next Tuesday. The exchange will be closed Monday, on account of the closing of the New York Stock Exchange, due to the Lindbergh day crowds in New York. .. Your Banker Knows.
