=g e e .’A ,',f LENTY of golfers have been told to keep a straight left arm in the back swing. The straight left arm back is no good with- out its companion in golf #wat—the straight right arm in the gorward swing. And another pecullar phase of the Pstraight left” is that the left arm is ot straight and stiff like a ramrod, while the right arm, going into the mall, is & good deal like a ramrod. It &ets that way, at least, about the time the ball is clicked away. The straight left back is a pretty od thing to omit from your golf rrm if the idea has taken such root with you that vou have a tendency to stiffen this arm in the back swing. WA Stiff left arm means stiff shoulders #nd dead wrists. Parts like that will mever do much with a golf club. The left arm should have a graceful eurve throughout the back swing. ‘While it is not stiff and straight, at the same time it never should be broken at the elbow. An elbow break Jets the club away from all natural and instinctive control. Some good players curved the arms in the ad- dress with the idea of keeping them that way throughout the back swing. 17 the left arm has been free of stilfness and elbow-breaking in the back swing. you will step into the forward swing well prepared. The left arm still has most of the work to do with the club going forward since it pulls the clubhead downward toward the ball. This pull gives you | a feeling that you are to slap the ball with the back of your left hand. Meantime, the right hand and arm coast along, not doing much of any thing as yet. But as the clubhead gets near the ball—and with your right side kept well up—the right arm snaps in. Here is where the solid hit comes from, since the left leg has oraced you for a blow from Qhe rlg!xl side. The main thing at the lnstént of hitting is to keep the left arm out there and on the job. collapse or break at the elbow, which will cause it to jerk in toward the body. The right arm depends on the left for a leverage action against the ball, and if the left arm breaks at the ‘elbow the action will be lost. Then, as you hit, let the right arm go clear through after the ball—straight and stiff, like a ramrod, clear out after it. (Covyright. 1927.) GOLF COMMITTEE NAMED | TO PASS ON MATEURISM "and its meaning within the intent of the laws governing amateur golf is be- fore the District Golf Associa- tion for decision and a thor- ough housecleaning of any charges @gainst any local player.is promised. The District Golf Association today has a standing committee, composed of representatives of five clubs, em- powered to investigate any rumors or direct charges of professionalism that may be raised against any player who :m?potea in golf events about the Cap- tal. Taken as a move to clear up any situation that may arise, the com- mittee, composed of A. E. Steinem of Town and Country, Guy Mason of Congressional, Dr. J. T. McClenahan of Washington, Morven Thompson of Chevy Chase and G. H. Chasmar of Columbia, was appointed last night at the annual meeting of the District Golf Assoclation at the Racquet Club. The committee was directed to make & _complete examination of all phases of the amateur standing of local ama- teur golfers and report its findings to the executive committee. A. E. Steinem was elected president ©f the association, after having served & term as first vice president. He suc- ceeds Robert Stead, jr., lof Chevy Chase. Other officers elected are: C. Chester Caywood, Indian Spring, first vice president; Middleton Beaman, Bannockburn, second vice president; Dr. William C. Barr, Columbia, secre- tary-treasurer. The District amateur championship ‘was awarded to the Indian Spring Club, after Columbia had also offered its course, but withdrew in favor of Indian Spring. Other tournament dates were fixed. A spirited discussion arose among the delegates from the several clubs on a motion to restrict entries to the local tournaments which might be binding upon the clubs of the as- sociation. Several delegates declared CHESS TOURNAMENT WITHOUT A DECISION By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 8~Two ad- Journments and a draw resulted from lay in the international chess mas- rs' tournament yesterday. Frank J. Marshall of New York and Rudolf Spielmann of Vienna came to a draw verdict after 50 moves in the play-off of an adjourned game from the early rounds. The United States champion again falled to fin- ish his adjourned match with Jose R. Capablanca of Cuba and play was postponed until Thursday. Dr. Alexander Alekhine of France and Aron Nimzowitsch, Danish cham- plon, played five hours and 30 moves in failing to complete an adjourned match of the eleventh round. Alek- hine held a slight advantage when time was called. The standings: Lost. i Marshail g% hlmlfl"ll:h WEALTH OF HORSES : | FOR MEET AT BOWIE Manager O'Hara of the Bowie track, svho has just arrived from the South, Lias taken off his coat and gone to work in earnest in preparation for the coming meeting of the Southern Maryland Association, which opens the Eastern racing season only three weeks away. 1t looks now as if Bowie were in for the finest Spring meeting in its history. The question of horses, which has usually puzzled in the Spring, is To longer giving any worry, and this geason instead of there being a dearth of good performers there is liable to be_an “embarrassment of riches.” With the addition of the new stabling put up last year the track can now show about 1,100 stalls, and these have already been applied for and there is a \\'altlng list. The motion was laid on the table. Several meetings on the caddy sit- uation were reported by the commit- tee appointed by the last annual meeting, but no agreement was reached on a satisfactory system for registering caddies. Tournament dates will be assigned and officers of the Women's District Golf Association elected at the an- nual meeting of the organization next Kon(}ay afternoon at the Willard otel. Tommy Armour, crack Congressional Country Club pro, and Bobby Cruick- shank of New York today were play- ing in the third round of the Miami four-ball professional golf champion- ship, well on their way to the final. They defeated Harry’ Hampton and Clarence Hackney yesterday, 4 and 3. Putt So Accurate Travis Hit Stymie SNOIII.DERS. TOES, HIPS, HEELSY KNEES-PARALLEL TO LINE OF PUTT BY SOL METZGER. At Palm Beach several years ago we refereed a final match for the Florida Winter championship in which Walter J. Travis played. Travis was a remarkable putter. He had to be to win three United States amateur and one British amateur championship, as his long game was completely lacking. So reliable was his putter that on the level fairways of matted Bermuda grass common to Florida, the “Old Man” used his putter for running them up from distances as far as 40 yards off the greens. In this particular match Travis was some 50 feet off the green, stymied by his opponent just a few feet off. Travis putted so ac- curately that his ball struck his opponent's, knocking it on the green and following it in so true a line that he was again stymied. We asked him afterward why he had not played around the first stymie. He thought the stymie so ;a‘xil away he could not hit this Travis had a carefully studied put- ting system. He lined up his toes, heels, knees, hips, elbows and shoulders on a line parallel with the line of the putt and used a pendulum swing. His touch and direction were uncanny. Try this method if your putter doesn't work and see that you stroke your clul through the ball, (Copyright. 1927.) — B.ACKETEBS ARE PAIRED.
