Chicago Dean Pleads for New Con- ception of Deity. CHICAGO, March 8 (#).—Religion must shape a new idea of God as a deity aligned with world advancement in sclence and democracy, Dean Shailer Mathews of the University of Chicago assailed the idea of the deity a8 a post-feudal monarch in an address to Methodist ministers here yesterday. “We cannot sweep back the ocean of sclence,” Dean Mathews said, “so we must preach God in accordance with the fundamental conceptions of soclety as they now exist. Our old plea of the deity as a post-feudal mon- arch no longer endures. ““We must not try to analyze men's souls through guinea pjgs,” the theol- ogist said, “but bring psychologists to the ald of religion by interesting them in our destinies, not our origin."
