Almost everything in the way of boosting of energy has been done between the| various stages, and finally between set and speaker. Now it is proposed to explore the “lower” end. The effect of antenna-set amplifica- tion is that of bringing the stations closer, rather than that of enabling the set to reach out for the stations. One favorable feature of amplification at this point s that much tube life and current is saved. In-| fluences of every hue already are be- ling brought to bear at the White| House for various candidates. | President Coolidge must appoint { (ive commissioners, one from each of five zones and no more than three from his own party. Their terms to be for two, three, four, five and vears, respectively, but their Sors are to be appointed for erms, thifs creating annual changes »r_reappointments. The commissionships pay $10,000 | the first year, but advert to a per diem basis when control passes after the first vear to the Secretary of Com- merce and the commission becomes a | oard of review. Then the salary is | to be $30 a day and expenses for each | day of official functioning. Thus the job can hardly be looked upon as a permanent Federal plum, and the ap- | pointee must necessarily have an out- de source of income to hold it—at <t, after the first year. Prospective Nominees Cited. Numerous names of prospective ap- pointees have been heard in Wash- ington, prominent among them being certain “lame ducks” who go out of office with the Sixtyninth Congress March 4 and who have served the ad- ministration faithfully and well. It is most likely, however, that the Presi- dent will be constrained to choose the “ommissioners chiefly from among n d in the field of radio. Perhaps the most eminently quali- fied men for posis are Judge S. B. Davis, jr., solicitor of the Department f Commerce, who handled lezal phases radio for the department when it exercised the control authority and who thus made himself _expert in phase, legal and otherwise; W. D. Terrell, chief radio supervisor of the Department of Commerce, prob- ably the best informed man on the »adcast situation today, and Dr. J. H. Dellinger, chief of the radio re. irch laboratory of the Bureau of Standards, as brilliant in the non technical phases of radio, which the ommission’s work necessarily . will antail, as he is on the technical side. But' these men are not likely to ac- cept places, even if offered. Judge Davis, it is understood, does not want he post. Mr. Terrell is too valuable Secretary Hoover where he is. Dr. Dellinger is in a position where he would rather advise the commission an be part of it. Three district adio supervisors of the government have been mentioned—John F. Dillon of the San Francisco district: S. W. “dwards of the Detroit district, and Arthur Batcheller of the New York listrict. So also has_Sam Pickard, radio director of the Department of Agriculture, who came here from Kan- sas with Secretary Jardine. Candidates Already Indorsed. Several direct indorsements have gone to the White House. Perhaps the strongest congressional indorse- ment has been given Lambdin Kay cf Station WSB, Atlanta, for whom both he Georgia and South Carolina-dele- gations in Congress have spoken per- sonally to President Coolidge. The Louisiana delegation has suggested Bradford Hearn of Shreveport, and H. \. Bellows of WCCO in the Twin Cities, has also been brought to President Coolidge's_attention. From the field of radio invention the President might pick John Hays Hammond, jr. of Gloucester, Mass. Maj. Gen. George O. Squler, retired, former head of the Army Signal Corps, and Maj. E. H. Armstrong of Columbia University, all of whom have been indorsed. Robert H. Marriott of New York, past president of the Institute of Radio Engineers, has been backed for one of the places by thes Radio Club of America, and the American Radio Relay League offers its presi- dent, Hiram Percy Maxim. Another name frequently mentioned in Laurens Whittemore of New York, who was secretary ‘of the first three radio con- ferences. Possible appointees of more definite political hue are being kept some- what “in the dark” by their sponsors. The only name heard very often is that of Frank Scott, retiring Repre. sentative from Michigan, who was chairman of the House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, which had charge of radio matters and who helped frame the new la was a mem- helped frame the new law as a mem. there are others. The University of Maryland Glee Club, which has made it a custom to face the microphone ence each year, will give its 1927 radio concert tonight at WRC. Dr. Homer House, director of the club, will introduce his singers on the air at 9:30 o'clock. Besides the ensemble numbers there will be solos by Dr. Hale, baritone; Pyles, clarinet- ist; Goodyear, tenor; Barron, bass, and Rader, pianist.
