February 18 —With only two of their number rising in protest. 23 delegates, representing garment and fur union locals. and ac- cused of holding communistic prin- ciples, were ousted last night by the Central Trades and Labor Council of New York. The action came after a letter from Willlam Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, granting the authority was read. Among the delegates expelled was Benjamin Gold, manager of the New York joint hoard of the Furriers' Union. Gold frequently had been charged with improper handling of the workers’ fund. and at the meeting of the American Federation of Labor in St. Petershurg. Fla.. in January, it was charged that the joint hoard had paid money to the police so that they would maintain a friendly attitude to- ward the strikers, These charges were denied by Police Commissioner George McLaughlin and by Gold, who said he had vouchers in full for the amount mentioned. By the Associated Press PIERRE, Dak., February 18.— South Dakota’s representatives voted | yesterday to sink $25,000 in a partially owned State oil well at Standing Butte, in Stanley County. Opponents of the measure declared that the State has a $4,000,000 overdraft, and “now we are adding $25,000 to the overdraft on a wildcat oil well.” The well heretofore was financed by sale of stock to South Dakotans. Last night it appeared that the most likely chance for a stay of, exe- cution was in the case of Quarles, but when the warden hurried to the death cell at 5 a.m. it was with a re- prieve for the other negro, Sam Wash- ington. Washington, sentenced to die for slaying his common-law wife, was de- nied an appeal by Gov. Small, but at the eleventh hour_ his attorneys obtained from Judge Harry ~B. Miller a atoy of a week in which to prepare an appeal, on a plea of error in the conviction. Quarles was convicted of killing a holdup victim. Lieut. Irwin Amberg Resigns. Résignation of First Lieut.
