Alston Hamilton, Coast Ar- tillery Corps, recently in command of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge has been promoted to the grade of brigadier general to fill the vacancy in the list caused by the statutory retirement of Gen. Thomas H. Slavens. He is from North Carolina and was graduated from the Military Academy in 1884. His earlier service was in the Cavalry and his later service in the Artillery. He was decorated for gallantry in action at El Cano, Cuba, and at Ca- lamba, Laguna, in the Philippine During the early part of the World War he commanded the coast defenses of New York, and in May, 1918, went to France in command of the 58th Coast Artillery.
