This, then, is one use we can make of enemies. The only real harm that my enemy can do me is for him to get Into the inside of my spirit and cause me to hate him. Hatred is the most horrible foe of the soul. There- fore, to meet cursing with blessing is the height of earthly wisdom as well as the perfection of heavenly beauty. How often, in the history of man, it has been proven that “a soft answer turneth away wrath”; and many a hard heart has been broken by gen- tleness and love coming in response to enmity and hatred. Victor Hugo taught, therefore, a profound and universal truth when he pictures Jean Val Jean finally sur- rendering to the innocent and subtle but all-powerful influence of the good bishop who had trusted and befriend- ed him, and who continued, through his prayers, to bless him even though this criminal had robbed him and fled from the home where the bishop had offered him Christian hospitality, car- rying the good bishop's treasures with him. And the most superlative height of earthly glory was reached when, in the midst of the anguish and agony of the cross, Jesus Christ lifted up His voice on behalf of those who had nailed Him there, and prayed for them, saying “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” The omnipotence of this perfect, divine and heavenly love will be mani- fested in the rule of righteousness and peace when Jesus returns to this earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. In the meantime, it is our high privilege to see the best even in our faulty fellows; and, as far as human limitations will allow, to build upon them: noble. and the nobility D e e o, ;_anfl a 3 se In majesty 0 meet your own. Called to Service. Our Lord's ministry had gripped the men of Galilee. Luke points out how the multitude had followed Him and He was compelled to borrow a boat for a pulpit. He repaid the own- jers for its use by directing them to |a great school of fish. This was pre- {liminary to their being invited to en- ter His service. He had met Andrew and Peter, James and John early in His ministry. They had_announced had seen more of them after moving His headquarters to Capernaum in His meetings in the synagogue and along the seaside, where He saw them fish- ing. These rough fishermen had open minds, unspoiled by philosophy and concelt, southat they had accepted Jesus. They had demonstrated that they were hard-working, energetic patient men, and no idlers or visionaries. Two of them were cast- ing their nets and the other two were mending their nets. Levi was prob- ably collecting taxes at his booth near the seashore, where the petty taxes for fish could be laid and collected. Doubtless he had shared in the publ discussions that Jesus conducted in ¥ teaching. These five were en- gaged at their work when the Master called them to enter His service. When Christ seeks men for His work He always finds them doing their daily tasks faithfully. Jesus called them individually and personally to follow Him. His com- mand to these five believers to become disciples, matriculate in His school, was given in such a manner that they were impressed with the idea that the Master felt that He was asking them to prepare for a greater business than the one that they had been following. It was a call to an immediate action, to conflict and loss, that was impera- tive. They were attracted by the per- sonality of Jesus. They were con- scious that He had “the sovereign right to exercise moral compulsion” towards them. The seat of authority in religion had changed from the Old Testament Scriptures to their Lord, who spake with such power that they accepted Christ, not as a definition, not as a system of doctrine, but His very self as the divine authority to direct and control their life, labor and love. The four straight followed Him in response to His command. Tt was a costly proposition for them, as it was for Levi, whom we know better under his new name of Matthew, to immediately leave their business and enroll in His school. Following Jesus. In response to the Lord’s command the five courageously left their old business to follow Him. Iour of them, as a result of this decision, are reported by tradition to have died a violent death because of their loyalty to Christ. Christian life starts with a breaking with debasing and destruc- tive habits. The important thing in their following Jesus is not what they left, but the fellowship they were called to enter. They were sum- moned to enter into a personal re- lationship, into an allegiance to Jesus as_thelr Master, and to change not only the spirit but also the task of then daily life. When one is con- vinced of their personal sin and finds in the Lord a personal Saviour, their conversion proves itself by a two- fold change, due to their love and obedlence of Christ’s commands, in character and conduct. Religious .emotion has on enormous motive force, but unless it is the prod- uct of the indwelling in the Christ, it will sizzle away in high professions and wordy prayers. This substitute for real religion is injurious to the Kingdom of God among men.. When one is moved by the love of Christ to.imitate Him in service they will be inspired to meet the needs of men. The five followed the Lord in His min- istry of iove that touched the hearts of ‘men, hey saw Him in the crowded synagogue preaching the good news of Things-As-God's-Love- ‘Will-Have-Them. They saw Him in the thronging streets, surrounded by the longtime sick with their tired eyes, the palsied with their trem- bling limbs, the shrieking demoniacs with thelr disordered minds, the anxious fathers and mothers bringing their Il children whose faces were premat@ely old with pain. - THey saw Higp move among the troubled people, & quiet Praying Soul.
